black specks in pee

Recommended Posts

So I don't want to get in the trap of thinking that every health symptom is related to my VSG 2 weeks ago, nor do I want to panic about anything, but tonight I urinated, and there were black specks in my pee, almost like someone shook a shaker of pepper over the toilet bowl. I feel completely fine and my urine was a nice pale yellow. I googled this and it sounds like they could be very small kidney stones? My mom just had kidney stones removed a few months ago so I may have a genetic predisposition.

I am definitely calling my doctor in the morning. Hopefully I'll be fine tonight, but if I have any back pain or other symptoms, I'll definitely go to the ER (hoping that doesn't happen).

I did start Ursodiol today to prevent gallstones, but I can't imagine that is related?

Has anyone else ever experienced this before or after VSG? VSG doesn't cause a greater risk of kidney stones, does it?

Thank you for any insights that you might have!

I've never read about increasing risk of kidney stones...gallbladder stones for sure are often said to be caused by rapid weight loss. I had to have that nasty nasty gallbladder out about 3.5 months after my wls surgery. The pepper flakes sound like a question for your doc, I would definately call him in the morning. Hope you have a night without any pain or discomfort. Luck!

I had kidney stones 1 week out after surgery. My urologist said I definitely had the stones in my kidneys, but the stress from surgery could have helped release one. I to had the black specs, followed by me passing a 6 mm stone! It could be some very tiny stones that are breaking up as they come down to the bladder. If they are be thankful your not in pain.

Thanks so much, Jen and JP--very helpful feedback. This morning I had about 3 black specks instead of a bunch of them, so hopefully they are dissipating. I did get dehydrated on Wednesday while I was out running errands (seems to happen really quickly these days), so I wonder if that had something to do with it. Hopefully there won't be any bigger ones that get stuck. Both my husband and mom have had kidney stones and I felt so awful for both of them.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
