Pre-op Low Carb Diet

Recommended Posts

I've been on my pre-op diet for 4 weeks and three days. I'm really having trouble today. I'm craving carbs REALLY bad. I haven't felt like this since the first week. I'm getting really frustrated. I have 15 more lbs to be below 50.0 BMI, which is required by my surgeon before my April 1st surgery date. I see my WLS team march 19th for my all day class and another weigh in. I'm so frustrated!! I do 30 minutes of aerobics everyday and it seems the past 2 days have been the worse. Anyone else having problems?

Can you have some low-carb veggies, so you get your fix without the "bad" carbs? Or even something like half a baked sweet potato?

What about cucumber?

That might be my best bet. I have been so unprepared this week for dieting. I need to just cut it up too and have it ready. My week has been so frustrating. Thank you! I love cucumbers and they do fill me up.

Cucumbers saved my sanity when I was on my pre-op diet. I would eat a whole cucumber with a little lemon and salt and a 3oz piece of grilled chicken for lunch everyday.

This may sound counterintuitive but, When I am struggling, I cut out everything except for Protein Shakes made with something other than milk and maybe a serving of cottage cheese or egg/meat... If I could get my carbs under 20 or 30 for a few days and that would seem to curb things for me. Then after a few days I was ok to add back in the non-starchy vegetables and my beloved kale juice and a bit of milk keeping my carbs under 60. I know it's really hard to do this over the long haul. I've been at this since December and have less than three weeks to lose the last five pounds before surgery and I think I'm going to come in just under the wire with 40 pounds lost in 3 and a half months.

Thank you both. I'm trying them both. I really appreciate it. I've felt my sanity slipping away. Again thanks!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
