I Travel 2 1/2hrs To My Bariatric Surgeon's Appts

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to share with you all:

I live in Greenville, MS and where I live there are no bariatric surgeons even close to where I live. So have no choice but to travel since I really wanted and needed this surgery. I drive 2 1/2 hrs to go to Oxford, MS. My other options were to go to Jackson, Ms (1 1/2 hr) or to Memphis, Tn (2 1/2 hr). Dr. Michael King in Oxford came highly recommended to me. I did my research on him and other bariatric surgeons and decided Oxford is where I would go. I'm originally from St. Louis, MO and I seriously considered moving back and staying with my daughter temporarily while I was going through the whole appointments and the wls. Because I know there are plenty of bariatric surgeons in the St Louis metro area I could've chose from. But I would've missed my husband a lot. :P

And at the same time when you want something really bad out of life, you're determined to do it what it takes to achieve success. Is there anyone else out there who travels a long way to their bariatric surgeons office?

I do too! It's about a three hour trip to my surgeon. Ironically, I live in Memphis. However, I chose a surgeon in Nashville for several reasons. I'm so glad I did. He is great and well worth the travel time for the excellent work he does.

I travel 2 hours to mine. It really is worth it! The only time it's bad is when the weather is crappy like yesterday I had an appt and it was snowing :(

Oh and when I had my surgery I had to sign a form saying I would make arrangements to stay in town for the first week after surgery being as I live over 50 miles from my dr. Yeah that was an expensive hotel bill!

I bet that was an expensive hotel bill. You should be able to claim that on your taxes next year. I would definitely try.

My surgeon told me I need to have a person who can bring me to the hospital during my first 30 days after the surgery in case something goes wrong.Since it is a 2 1/2 hr drive and if I didn't, he wouldn't recommend I do the surgery. Luckily I have my husband and a really good friend of mine who can be on call in case I need either one of them.

I have a local hospital that performs bariatric surgeries, the surgeon here just doesn't do the sleeve as a standalone procedure. Thankfully, my surgeon is okay with me coming home after they release me (minimum 3 day stay) and being treated by the local surgeon if I have complications. Thank goodness!

We are getting a hotel room for my husband while I'm in the hospital, as the hospital strongly discourages overnight visitors (those little chairs are crappy to sleep in any way)...if anyone else is doing that or is required to stay like pp, I highly recommend Hotwire. Just choose a one of the selections that is highly recommended and use the map to make sure it's kind of in the area, and you should be good. We use it all the time and have never had a bad experience yet.

4 hours with a mountain pass! Very worth the trip for the quality people! We chose to stay in town 2 nights after I got out. Not sure if that makes me a pessimist or realist!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
