Feeling a little better post-op

Recommended Posts

immediately after being sleeved on February 18th , I was absolutely miserable! The gas pain was excruciating ! Everyone said it would be painful, but I was not prepared for just how painful it was! I'm feeling a little better two days later, just trying to get in all my liquids! Anyone who is in the beginning stages, just know that it does get better!!

Check out my battle scars!

My surgery was also on the 18th. I came home last night. I am still feeling miserable.I haven't been able to drink more than one bottle of Water (16.9 oz) today. Keep getting nauseous. In between naps i am walking around.

Anyone else with similar problems? Any suggestions?

Try drinking hot tea or something warm. I couldn't tolerate Water the first few days.

I did try hot tea. Felt good at first, but few minutes later started to hiccup (which hurts like hell) and then i felt sick. I just got off phone with doc & he said most important thing at this stage is hydration, pain control and nausea control.

If it takes me longer to progress to full bariatric liquids that's ok.

I guess a but of depression it's setting in. Just cried for 10minutes wondering what the hell i got myself into and feeling like a freak reading how well others have been doing post op.

I know it'll be worth it in the long run, just hard to see past today.

broth, but make sure it's just warm. My surgeon told me hot tea, coffee etc. not a good idea. Room temp Water or broth is best. I'm 4 weeks out today, I am finally 100% pain free, but it lingered for 3 weeks! The gas pain is so bad! All I can tell you is to keep moving through the pain. The other thing that helped me "move the gas" was to lay in the floor on your back, pull your legs to your chest and just lay there like that for a few minutes. So this about once an hour. It does get better!

My surgeon just wants me to get in 4 ounces per hour so I don't get dehydrated. He wants me to make sure that 2 ounces are Water (or water substitute like wylers light packets) and then the other 2 ounces from full liquids like creamed Soups that have been strained...make sure to get in 8 ounces of Protein a day. Send me your email and I will type of a copy of my docs post op liquid diet guidelines... you don't want to drink so much that you overwhelm your sleeve (it's still brand new and healing) but you want to get in enough that you don't become dehydrated. That could be dangerous.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
