Why do they mix the barium with Kool-Aid

Recommended Posts

Had my surgery yesterday the 19th. Pain was bad upon waking up but it has improved. So has my walking. I walked down the hallway only as far as my room yesterday. Today I did 2 laps around the hallway.

Did my leak test and passed. Why they put grape Kool-Aid in it I will never know. Now I can't look at the stuff without gagging. If all goes well, I should be released tomorrow. Waiting for my tray of liquids.

First off Congratulations, welcome to the sleeve side. So good to here everything went well. As for mixing barium with kool aid I have no idea, I wish they would of mixed mine like that. The taste of that stuff is horrible lol. I was just thinking, do you have a drain? If you do maybe it to see if there is any leaks and if there was it would come out of the drain purple. Again congrats our new sleeve sister :-)

I have never heard of any hospital putting flavor in the contrast. I just drank it. That's weird

Was it a clear liquid the have you? Or a white chalky mixture? Barium is the white chalky one. They usually don't give that to sleeve patients. Usually they use gastrographin which tastes horrible!! So that's why they probably mixed it with kool aid for you :)

Congrats on your sucessful surgery and making through the leak test. Yuk!

They mix it with Kool-Aid cause the nurses never get tired of seeing the Kool-Aid man burst through the wall. :P

Mine was not mixed with anything, but I was told they mix it with blue dye or strong dark purple colors sometimes so that if they did somehow miss a leak, it would be unmistakable coming out of the drainage tube.

When I have my bi-yearly cat scans the they make me drink Barium (chalky stuff) and it actually comes in a couple flavors. But the gastrographin (fluid from hell) used for the leak test is clear and flavor is added to cover the bitterness of the iodine

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
