Need Exploratory Surery and Have ???

Recommended Posts

I have a lap band and I'm in serious pain. I had two lousy Docs put in the band 2 years ago and I've had problems ever since, but now I have one of the best surgeons in the country and she wants to exploratory surgery to find out and fix the problem.

Has anyone had a revision? She said she would replace the band if there was a problem with it as long as there is no infection. Has anyone had this done in one surgery?

I forgot why I have to go on liquids for over a week. I'm going to miss Thanksgiving . It's to shrink your liver right? So, is it more important to make sure everything is low cal or that it is purely liquid?

Thanx

Like leatha_g, I had a slippage that didn't repair itself completely when they unfilled me, so they took my back out and replaced it in the same surgery. Everything went fine and has been much easier to heal from than the original banding (maybe I have a higher tolerance for pain now, or maybe its because they didn't have to sew in a new port?)

I had to do liquids the first time around to shrink the liver, but this time, due to how much weight I've already lost, the surgeon said it was unnecessary. Each surgeon is different though and especially if they're going to be poking around in there (for the exploratory surgery), you want to stick w/ what the surgeon suggests. They have their reasons

Also keep in mind that if they replace the band, its like being banded all over again, so you'll probably have to follow the liquids, then mushies, then solids thing, as I am doing now.

Good luck with it all and I hope she finds the issue!

I have done a number of these, if you're in experienced hands it should turn out fine. If you're talking about Dr. Ren, then you are definitely in the best of hands!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
