I am committed. I'm just scared of those sad moments that happen in movies like old yeller and that one with the kid from Malcolm in the middle. What I wish I could have is that darn British gecko.

My wife and I rescued our 3 rd dog so far in our marriage. We always rescue from shelters and we got our current dog a little on the younger side: 1 year old. I cannot imagine my day without my dog. He is a 1/2 English springer and 1/2 border collie. He is super smart and very affectionate, a definite family dog who needs lots and lots of attention ( we do not mind :)) I would say it is worth it no matter what the cost to have a best friend to hang out with. I agree with you that saying good bye to your dog is one of the hardest things to do, but I still continue to rescue (1 dog at a time) because the benefits far, far, far outweigh the costs.

Well in Old Yeller the dog dies. I'm figuring as old as the book/movie is, spoilers are okay at this point.

Though it still makes me wonder who was so screwed up that they thought making Old Yeller dog food was a good idea. I still /boggle every time I see that at the store.

Yeah I knew of old yeller. I was sure he wasn't planning on shooting his dog so I wondered what sad moments he was afraid of.

I know what you mean. My dog got sick, went to the vet, found a place to treat her, and she made it to the waiting room and couldn't hang on. All happened within 4 days. I went to the SPCA where I found her and just like the first time another had been brought in. I pushed some children out of the way and snatched the tag and brought her home.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
