Postponing surgery -- SO PISSED!

Recommended Posts

Okay I just need to vent.

I had an ulnar osteotomy on my right arm last January (2012.) My arm doctor bitched about me being overweight and I told him I was researching WLS -- he says "oh that's great!"

I went to the seminar, started attending my nutritionist appointments...

Then I had an ulnar osteotomy on my left arm Nov. 1, 2012. He says wait til January to have surgery. January came and he said wait until march to have surgery. Well now my surgery is scheduled for march 5 and he says NO WAY. My arm bone hasn't healed completely so he wants me to wait.

But here's my frustration. If my arm is unable to heal with my current eating and nutritional intake, who's to say that after surgery -- when I'm supplementing and watching that I get certain nutrients -- my bone will heal any less? I'm so annoyed right now! It took so long to get to this point and now he won't even give me an estimate of when he thinks it'd be okay for me to get sleeved.

Urgh!!

I'm sorry to hear this. Did he have any suggestions/recommendations on what supplements you should be taking to help with the healing process?

I'm currently using a bone growth stimulator that send electric pulses to my bone, prompting new cells to form. Other than that, he hasn't said anything -- he didn't even call me himself, I got a call from his receptionist who couldn't even answer any of my questions!

So, it's fine I called me surgeons office and am going to get his opinion. Since I'll be supplementing Calcium and D after surgery, I'm thinking my bone might have a better chance after surgery!

I'm continuing with my preop diet, though. My coordinator was super nice and told me that if I absolutely had to reschedule it, it'd be the beginning of April.

Maybe you should start taking the Calcium and Vitamin D supplements now to help with the bone recovery.

I've been taking 1,000iu of d3 2x a day for the past month or so. I ordered some calcium pills and they are so big I choke so I've ordered liquid calcium.

The same thing happened with my right arm. Using the bone growth stimulator will fix it, it'll just take a little while.

I just think the bone growth stimulator is all I need -- sleeve or not -- to heal my bone, and being sleeved isn't going to have that great of an impact. I have a call into my surgeon's office so he can give me a second opinion. I'm just upset with the arm doctor -- I don't think he knows how much it has taken to get to this point!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
