Pre Surgery Bowel Prep Blues

Recommended Posts

If you don't have the stomach for this please keep it moving.

Please share your bowel prep guidelines, survival tips etc..

My bowel prep guidelines are

Dr ordered K-Dur Potasium pill

238 grams of Miralax mixed with 64 ounce of Gatorade not purple red or orange.

9:00 take two

11:00 take one

2:00 start Miralax/Gatorade drink

Nothing to eat by mouth :( only broth and liquids.

I'm not sure if its the nerves but I already started running to the bathroom. My stomach is making funny rumbling sounds.Thank God I work from home. Its going to be a long day.

At first I thought this sounded intense...but when you said take two, take one, you meant potassium pills, right? I have taken miralax post op and it is pretty gentle. I had to do mag citrate pre op which was a little rough...a lot more intense than miralax. Just keep up on your fluids you will need it for surgery...you don't want to be dehydrated.

Miralax mixed with Gatorade is very rough the only reason they had me mix it with gade is so I won't dehydrate. I started drinking, I have to down 64 ounces I have to drink eight ounces every fifteen to thirty minutes.

It won't be too bad. I had the miralax and Gatorade for my colonoscopy...oy. For the sleeve it was Clear Liquids and magnesium citrate which was much better. Oh, I also used a lot of Vaseline on the bottom to avoid elimination burn....if you know what I mean.

Lucky mate!

I wish I did have a prep. Instead I dealt with 3 days of horrible Constipation. The waste was still in my body and the drugs made it very hard and impacted. It was hell. Next time I have a surgery I will do a prep regardless if its required.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
