So I was sleeved on February 14th. The first day I didn't feel awful but the next day I cried. I had horrible gas pains, the nausea was constant and I was have a huge bout of buyers remorse. Today (4 days post op) I am feeling slightly better. My gas is moving and finally coming out and I am in taking a little more. I would love to hear from those that are further along so they can tell me how they feel. Will I ever be normal? Will I be able to go to a social function and indulge in a glass of wine? Will I be able to eat a least half a burger at a BBQ or is red meat a no no. Come on people let me know that I have made a good decision..

You'll be a new normal! A better, healthier normal. I'm just 9 weeks out, and I can tolerate most foods, though I stick to the high Protein items my doctor and nut recommend for the most part. And yes, though some seem to think it's never allowed again, I drink wine. Once a week I have 2-3 glasses of wine. That's my big night out for the week. My doctor clears us at 7 weeks for wine. Even with the wine, I've only once come anywhere close to the 1200 calories a day that my doctor recommends. Usually I'm at 750-900. And I feel great! (oh, and for me personally, the wine helps with Constipation, but that may just be me.) And please note, my doc approved it-- you don't want to do anything that your doc hasn't. I guess I'm just saying that at your point, it was hard to imagine things being anywhere close to normal again. Now, I've adjusted to this, and I feel amazing. I wouldn't change anything-- it's one of the best things I've done for myself in my whole life!

What is that tv show??? Oh yeah

"the new normal"

Yes you will be normal again and will be able to socialize and drink a glass of wine (down the road).

But it will be a new kind of normal.. a "normal" normal. Not the old normal of overindulging!

How many times can I use the word "normal"

:P

Yes, you'll feel normal again give it some time. You just had surgery, the pain meds can make you feel like crap! Once you are moving around a bit more and "eating" more food you'll feel better. I'm not allowed wine until I'm six months out so, sorry can't help with that one.

Just take it day by day and pretty soon you will discover how much better you feel and how you have adapted to the new normal you! I had VSG 5 months ago and I remember how you are feeling but I promise, it didnt last. Yes there are things you have to get used to, like eating slowly, only eating a little while others finish their plates but you do get used to it and it really isnt a big deal. Just be patient and soon this, just like all those pounds, will be a memory. Keep your chin up!

LOL.. I'm not sure if you should take any "normalcy" advice from Laura ;-) ... Or me, so I will pass on suggesting if you will be normal. I have never been normal in my life... At least that's what my family tells me.

But I think every one is probably right, over time you will be a better you

Those are great questions and they have crossed my mind as well. Thank you for asking. :)

Normal is a setting on a dryer, so, no, you'll never be normal. ;) But, fairly soon you'll forget that you are sleeved, at least until you go to eat something and realize that you can't eat anywhere near as much as before.

I am 14 days out so I cannot tell you much. I do think that each stage you move through will have a new challenge. The pre-op diet is hunger, then surgery and the pain and gas, then trying to get in you minimum liquids and Protein and find a good routine, then figuring out how much food is the right amount of food, etc. I just started softs and I have been nervous about how much to eat and hoping I wouldn't have any trouble with keeping food down. That being said, I have friends who were sleeved three to four years ago and they live what you probably would consider "normal" lives. They are not fixated on their food. It has become second nature to them. They eat small portions of normal food, including wine and candy.< /p>

At a year out and a size four I can tell you that you will be perfectly normal and happier than ever. I admit the first three months were not so great, but really it's a small price to pay for an amazing future. By 6-8 months I barely remembered the rough part. Now everything feels very normal only I don't crave or want anything. I don't eat much, but I'm very used to it and think in general portions are crazy huge. Best wishes, hang in there. Not only does it get better it gets amazing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
