Does anyone else find it funny that every nutritionist and dietition in the world will tell you to lose weight you have to eat and to avoid starvation but this surgery puts your body in starvation mode?

this freaked me out totally in the first months. I quickly made sure I got up to 1200 cals a day (to avoid this, and muscle wasting and tanking my metabolism.) I made goal eating 1200-1500 cals a day. It still blows my mind that some people it 400-600 cals a day!!

My surgeon said once I am on the solid food stage I need to be getting 1200 calories a day, so it's crazy to me to see everyone consuming half that most days

wow.. I dont go over 800 im told.. but most of that is protein.. the bars are 200 alone.. but I dont need to eat that if I get my 60g of Protein in with meat and fish and cheese..and drink my water.. I think once im on track.. I can do under 1200.. but right now im required 800.. but im not ever hungry.. so eating is a hard thing for me.. never thought I would hear myself say that LOL. its all good.. im doing great my surgeon says.. other than over doing it with work..and having some pain as a result.. im great.. no issues.. and weight loss is going fabulous..

How much have you lost Steve? How far out are you? I struggle to get 800 a day. I am almost nine weeks out.

I currently eat around 900 calories a day and have been averaging about a pound a day in weight loss. When i first started onto solid foods i was only eating around 600 a day and my weight loss had stalled, once i raised my intake to 900 it resumed and has remained consistent.

How do you get enough calories in when I am full at 1/2 to half cup of food?

I was thinking of eating between my meals or every two hours a few bites. It's so hard to eat all your food then try and get your Water in. Especially when you have wait before and after each time you each time you eat!

My NUT said my stall is a result of being in starvation mode. She also noted that I need more complex carbohydrates. I'm finding it extremely difficult to get in at least 800 calories and can only get about 32 ounces of Water at this point. I did break the stall I was in as soon as I increased my calories and added complex carbs.

I'm so dehydrated that I've been told to wake up a couple times in the night to drink some water. This part of the journey is extremely difficult. I just have to keep in mind that it won't always be so hard. I will succeed at this. I just have to learn how to give my body what it needs to function.

Yes, considering "starvation mode" is largely mythical

I find it more difficult to stay below 600. Just my Protein shake alone is 250.

thats pretty high, is that more than one Protein Shake? how much sugar? It probably doesnt matter much, I'm just curious.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
