What has your doctor told you to eat/or what not to eat over the next year?

Just wanting to compare. I just had surgery on Feb 12th. Feel like I'm doing well. Here's what my doctor has printed out for the first year.

400 to 600 calories per day

No more than 15 carbs per day or 5 per meal

No bread, rice, Pasta or noodles for a year (because of the carbs)

No beef for a year.

No diet soda ever again

Only fat-free milk, yogurt, etc ever

60 to 80 grams of Protein per day

64 oz of fluids per day.

What does your diet for the rest of your life look like?

Wow who is your dr? This is really strict. Seems like you would loose all your weighting in a lot less than a year

The carbs seem really low!! You poor thing I do between 20 to 30 and well, that's kinda low compared to a lot of people ...

And the calories in the beginning that sounds good but I would think 400 to 600 after the six month point seems a little low also??

Same here. 4 weeks out I can eat/try anything I want. He did say opt for Protein first then veggies if I have room.

jeesh!! My team of docs, np's nuts, and nurses said eat at least 1000 cals a day when able. carbs are not restricted either. I would waste away on that. My Breakfast alone is more than your days worth of cals!

there are 12 carbs alone in 8oz of skim milk how the heck do they expect you to stay under 15 carbs a day!!!!

Your right Tiffany...mine did tell me to eat my Protein first..then veggies if room! He also said he'd rather I EAT my protein & NOT drink it!

I am 6 weeks out. I eat about 1k calories a day. 60-90 grams of Protein, 30-70 carbs. I eat some bread but no rice or Pasta. Carbs are coming from dairy and fruit mostly but i sneak in a piece of chocolate a few times a week. I can eat beef, but i haven't tried steak bc i dont care for it. I eat what i want most of the time but use common sense. I stay away from fried foods and pastry, though i have had a bite here and there. I am down 30 pounds since 1/1/13. Losing 2-3 lbs a week. Going to start working out this week and maybe that 2-3 lbs will increase! But if not that is ok. I am losing and i am happy!!!

I can't complain about my dr anymore lol. My diet is structured but nowhere near as strict as this I'm basically told at least 64 oz of Water, 90-120 g of protein(due to my size), and carbs should be about half of your Protein Intake. So for me 45-60 grams a day. As far as soda I was told to avoid but wasn't told never on anything. I've been told mainly protein, protein, protein.

I have not had my first postop checkup yet. Prior to surgery I was told to have 60 to 70 g of Protein a day and only up to 30 g of carbs a day. I was not given a daily caloric intake however I feel 600 to 700 cal a day is far too low to maintain for the rest of someone's life. I am hoping when it comes to eating normally I can have between 1000 and 1200 cal a day and still lose or maintain what I have lost at that point. I want to live and eat like a normal healthy human being. My surgery was on January 28 and my first postop is the 26th of this month where I will weigh in for the first time! I'm so very excited and have not been on the scale since the day before surgery.

Wow. I don't see how it would be possible to keep the carbs that low unless he means net carbs, but even at that it would be difficult. I really don't understand why they would say no beef, seems strange to me. also from personal experience when i tried to maintain a 600 cal a day diet i wasn't losing and since i have upped it to 900 i lose close to 1 pound a day. It is true that everybody has different requirements that help their body to lose weight and that is why the dr i see believes you have to figure out what works best for you and not use some cookie cutter style diet.

keep carbs low but not that low.. 600-800 cal for now.. and I eat my 60g of protein.. and no carbonated anything.. no white rice.. no coconut.. ever.. just eat the Protein first.. otherwise no real bad limitations.. just watch and eat right.. stay away from fast food..and I keep my sodium low.. I use mrs dash.. your diet is really strict.. I thought my doc was bad lol.. you will be a toothpick in no time.. ive lost 52lbs in 8weeks myself.. and im happy with that..

Wow, that does seem awfully restrictive! Like others here, my goal with surgery was to learn to eat normally, not to be on another crazy restricted diet. I am 5 months out, have lost sixty four pounds and eat right around 1200 calories a day very comfortably. Honestly, I can't imagine cutting what I eat now in half and not feeling terribly deprived. To keep that up for a year is quite a challenge, my very best to you in your recovery from surgery and the diet your doctor has recommended for you.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
