Post-Op Transition Back to Food -- SLOW!

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone else's doctor is as strict and slow-progressing back to solid foods as mine. Here is my plan to follow:

post-op: Clear liquids only first 5 days

Then, 2 weeks of Protein shakes only

Then, 2 weeks of mushies (no carbs)

Then finally, solid foods (minimal carbs only from veggies and fruits)

My doctor's practice also is very strict on limiting most all carbs, promoting the most successful weight loss.

I don't mind this plan, as I truly value my doctor's and nutritionist's knowledge and desire to see me succeed. I am just curious as to other's plans to follow since it seems that many here eat mushy and solid food much sooner after surgery.

Jessica

sleeved: 2/11/13

Your right...everyone's doctor's are different. I was cleared for real food after 2 weeks & have had no problems. Best advice is to follow what YOUR doctor says! Good luck!

I dont know. I just dont enjoy the pureed stuff. It is difficult to think of things to eat. I am also afraid of not being able to tolerate something or to eat too much or too quickly. With liquids it seems to be pretty easy and I dont have to put much thought into it. I know what to do and what I can have. I am sure it will get better. Just how I am feeling in the beginning of the pureed stage.

Ah.. But that may be a good thing! Sounds like food is not the top priority anymore! I so hope i have to eat out of necessity rather than joy. Thanks for responding.

No problem. Let me know how you make out. I am still looking for pureed recipes that look good to me. Have found a few that I will have to try.

I was sleeved 2/12. I had to do clear liquids until I was tolerating them well. I started full liquids today. Protein Shakes are no problem, strained and thinned f/f cream Soups are kinda making my stomach hurt so I'm thinking I'm not quite ready. I'm going to hold off on that for another couple of days and try again. I do the full liquid thing for 2 weeks. Then blended/pureed foods for two weeks. And then soft Proteins for 2 weeks and then slowly start to incorporate everything else as tolerted. My doc really encourages listening to your body and advancing as tolerated within reason. Today is the first day I've been "hungry", but I think it's more that I want to chew something and am head hungry. I dreamed about food last night. LOL I think also the gas moving around kinda feels like hunger pangs.

My doctor is the same way. He wants me to use this time to relearn how to eat and feel satisfied. I honestly think for me I am better with this tighter restrictions.

Not hungry at all. I know when there are rumbles in my stomach that it is just gas bubbles.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
