Working out within the first month of surgery...

Recommended Posts

Hey gang...are there any other safe workouts besides walking I can do within the first month of surgery? My doc said no strenuous workout until after 4 weeks, but walking is not a productive workout for me...I need more cardio!

What about changing the incline on a treadmill? Good luck!

I ran pre-op, I asked about it, and was told NO by my surgeon, nutritionist and the specialist I see back at home now... I see him on the 26th again which will be 5 weeks post op and hoping to get the clearance.. I felt amazing 2 weeks ago, and decided to move a fireplace upstairs from downstairs and boy did I feel that! I'm stubborn and don't like asking people for help, don't ask! Soo needless to say when they say no lifting or strenuous workouts for 4-6 weeks... they say it for a reason, unfortunately I learnt the hard way.

I know it's difficult to sit idle, but walking is the safest. You will have plenty of time to get all sorts of crazy cardio in and u will probably feel way better than working out preop. It's worth the wait to heal correctly. Hang in there! In the mean time u could increase ur walking distance as u get stronger. Just don't overdo it, take it easy.

I hear you! i used to do 2 hr cardio mixed w/weights 3 timex per week. I miss it so much. step class 2x per week. Now, I've been doing treadmill, eliptical and bike 1 1/2 mile & then I do some resistance (life fitness)14 machines, 2x. I miss the heavy sweating and my heart pounding, but i'm told that in order to get there, i need to take it easy now! Just don't stop walking or working out somehow as long as it's safe

I was given clearance to begin the elliptical and recumbent bike 7 days post op. I had surgery Monday and started the elliptical the following Monday. Basically doc said, no lifting, but I can do anything physically that does not cause me pain.

I do hold on to the rails for some of the elliptical workout because I'm still healing and my core still hurts. I don't want to screw with that area.

I'm an 'ants in the pants' kind of gal and I was grateful!

I have ants in the pants too!! Lol...I need activity to jump start my weight loss again. I am going to do the MJ Experience on the Wii. It's always a fun workout for me and not too strenuous. I think I should be safe doing that as there are not too many ab moves. Thanks for the feedback!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
