Taste change after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I keep finding that things I used to like I no longer can stand after surgery. For instance, I have loved apple juice my entire life but cannot drink it to the point of gaging since surgery. I also cannot stand the flavor of jellos. I also now LOVE gatorade. Never even liked the stuff before but now it's the best thing since sliced bread. Same experience with some gravy my mom made the other day and some Soup I made. Before I would have thought it was okay or not a big deal now it tastes soo super good. Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, and it's surprising. Lots of things don't taste good anymore. It's a little funny, because I am (or was) a great cook, if I do say so myself :) . People love to come to my house for parties because the food is always great and there's a ton of it. (I know everyone will be suprised by that). I noticed that when my thin friends had parties, they didn't have much or very good food...and of course, the "thick" friends thought so too. So now, I am starting to think I won't know what's good anymore, lol!! Not that I care...food has lost it's hold on me, and I don't care if people wonder why I forgot how to cook.

That happened to me for about 4-6 weeks, then things slowly came back to normal. The only thing that never came back for me was canned tuna. Used to do tuna salad on crackers, sandwiches, salads - not really my thing anymore. My doctor told me the anesthesia coming out of your system can cause that sometimes, plus the ketosis state your body is thrown into on the liquid/mushy phase.

I MISS HAVING A CHEESEBURGER! I can no longer tolerate them. I also loved scrambled eggs...not any more! I used to drink the Protein Shakes rather easily. Not anymore...they make me hurl! Oh, well......

I don't Love oreo Cookies like I once did. I still like them just not like I used to. On the other hand, I really love Juicy Juice! It goes down so well and I can drink it all day if I'm not careful!

I am two weeks out and notihng tastes that great. Foods that I used to crave now hold little interest. It's a new feeling to not care about food, a little scary, but overall I'm okay with it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
