You just quit. It will be 7 years this July that I quit smoking. The only way I could do it was cold turkey. I said I was done and I meant it.

I didn't realize how much "eating" has been my "comfort." Have you ever noticed how many food commercials are on tv? Or food shows? I have to find something else for "comfort" now - and I feel like I have gone "cold turkey" (no pun intended). I'm only 1 1/2 months out and it has not been what I thought it would. I am hoping I have not traded "quality of life" for a skinner, healthier self... The last few weeks have been a total WTF moment. Guess I'm going thru food withdrawal.

5yrs ago I quit smoking after being a 1.5-2pk a day smoker for 10yrs. One of my biggest motivators was my grandma dying from lung disease. My grandpa is now also suffering from the worst case of emphysema his dr has ever seen. You honestly just have to make the decision that you are done. If you don't want to quit nothing is going to make you quit. The first few days sucks but it was the best choice I've made in a long time. Now the smell of them makes me so sick I have no desire to ever smoke again. Remove yourself from situations where you would normally smoke and busy yourself with other things. put that money you would be spending on cigarettes in a jar somewhere each time you have the urge to buy a pack and look at how much you save a month. If you have kids look at them every day and remind yourself you want to be healthy for them. That should be motivation enough.

Don't miss a thing....glad to have done it. It probably gave me back 10 year of my life that the fork was going to take away from me.

Than you. I have cut back but now its time to quit. I can do this! No more coughing sounds great. I can put the money aside for a shopping spree....I know for sure clothes will be needed. My kids are my motivation for the surgery, they will be my motivation foe smoking. :)

Also here are a few fun facts about what happens after you quit

* In 20 minutes you will have a decrease in blood pressure, and it should return to normal.

* In 8 hours, the levels of toxic carbon monoxide will return to normal.

* In 48 hours, most of the nicotine will leave your body, and the risk of heart attack will greatly decrease.

* In 2 weeks, circulation will return, and continue to get better.

* In three to nine months your lung capacity will get better.

* In 1 year, the dangers of heart attack will be reduced by half.

* In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.

* In 10 years the risks of lung cancer will return to that of a non-smoker.

* In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

My sense of smell and taste returned after quitting as well, it was great.

For those that have had surgery I'm wondering what you miss most after having had it done.

I miss Coca Cola. Big time!

I have to say I am so glad I quit smoking. I quit 106 days before my surgery and I am so proud of myself. I'm 5 days post op right now and deep breaths, yawning, sneezing, crying, laughing, and coughing are the most painful activities right now. I can't imagine coughing like I did when I was a smoker, the abdominal pain from all that coughing would kill me!

How did you give up smoking before surgery?? That is my hardest task. Thanks

I have smoked since I was 14 years old, a pack a day. I am now almost 40. I honestly thought that this would be the thing that prevented me from having this surgery, because I didn't think that I could do it. First, I told myself that it was temporary, that I wasn't necessarily quitting for good (just for my psyche). Second, I ordered some e-cigarettes (V2 brand) with non nicotine cartridges, and then I braced myself. The first two days were really tough. I could tell that I was chemically withdrawing from the nicotine. I cried a lot. After that, I promise it became so much easier. It was so surprisingly easy, I still can't believe it. And to be honest, I was soooo proud of myself that I want to continue to not smoke. I have only been off of them for a little over a month, but I am feeling great. I had my surgery on Tues. the 12th, and I am doing great! I miss cigarettes, but not so much that I want to start up again. Hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
