Eating before surgery

Recommended Posts

I am going to be honest here- I was also not required to do a pre-op diet. I lost 23 lbs before surgery without much effort- we were on a tight budget and stopped eating out. I also quit eating late at night (I work 3rd shift). That seemed to do it. I still pretty much ate what I wanted. I didn't have a "last meal"' date=' either. BUT, I don't see what harm there is in picking one food you really like that will either be off-limits or in very limited quanities post-op and eating what you want of it. Or going out for ONE dinner at let's say, Olive Garden. Just my two cents.

I'm so glad you wrote in. I feel like I'm nuts for even questioning this! It's good to know that others have been faced with this as well.

I had the same dilemma, so I allowed myself my failure meal instead of a full blown binge session. But you know what I couldn't go pass a few bites be cuz it just didn't feel good. I saw all that hard work was being defeated. So I stopped and walk away. Your right it's a mind game. And you r alot stronger than u think.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!

I think I would be the same way if I sat down to eat the meal(s) I'm referring to. I don't think I would be able to take more than a few bites. As it is my appetite has decreased so much over the past couple of months, I wouldn't be able to stomach much.

I went on a binge a month pre op, i lost my weight and got my date 3 weeks out. since i know you have kaiser as well, so do i, my surgeon said stop eating 6pm the day before. my last meal: grilled cheese and small pink lemonade from in n out. i think fondly to my grilled cheese at times. Getting the actual date really made me commit as i was pretty flakey with my diet before that.

I sometimes mourn my old big portion sizes. Not that I don't enjoy the sleeve or my current portion size, it's hard when you go out to eat and you have a few bites of the entree and that's it. I'll never regret it, but at the end of the day, the sleeve has changed my life forever and eventually, I won't be a slave to food anymore

I went through the same thing a month before my surgery (I was sleeved on 1/28) and I met with my surgeon 10 days before. He said it was a true and normal medical condition called "last supper syndrome" for me it was going through thanksgiving and Christmas knowing next year will be different. He said because I was putting so much thought into food to start my Clear Liquids effective immediately which meant no actual final meal. I was super sad for a really long time, but realized I can still have the foods I love. I start my soft diet tomorrow which means I can actually chew food so my brain cannot stop thinking of the possibilities and it is hard to explain but just feels different than before. So my advise is to do what you feel is comfortable and just know food will be still be there afterward. :) good luck!!

Thank you for sharing that. It's so nice to hear of other people that have experienced this same struggle.

I totally understand what you are thinking. I feel like I have room to play with too and I go to just clear liquids on Monday for Tuesday surgery. Honestly, I'm going to let myself have a small piece of chicken tonight and a salad. Just a small plate for dinner. I would be way too scared to do a fat girl pig out (I know that term so well!! I bet we would've had fun together!) because I'm afraid carbs and stuff will show up in my liver or make it slippery and hard to work with or something and close me up without doing the surgery. Don't do anything extreme!

No Fat Girl pig out session for me! I'm sticking to my guns! I've come too far to waste it now.

Nope you are not being dramatic. You know you. This is a huge transition and it makes most of us face some hard truths about ourselves and it gives us the gift of a " do over.". It has been truly amazing so far and i just cant wait to experience the next year ahead! Try to enjoy the ride and not overanalyze too much! Good luck.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
