Abdominal ultrasound

Recommended Posts

OMG! HOLY HELL! I couldn't believe how uncomfortable that was! The only ultrasounds I have had were when I was pregnant. They squirt the jelly on you and run the scanner gently across your belly. This was so uncomfortable I was gritting my teeth so hard I'm surprised I didn't chip a tooth! At one point I was going to tell the ultrasound tech, "Enough! What the hell are you doing to me?!" She had to get the scanner up under my ribs and it was so uncomfortable. I have a high threshold for pain normally so I was surprised at how uncomfortable I was! I'll be surprised if my ribs aren't bruised! :(

Sorry that you had such an uncomfortable experience! I am a sono tech and try to warn my patients ahead of time that the exam can get a little uncomfortable and to let me know if I am causing them pain. Scanning in between the ribs gives the doctors better pictures of most organs but I know scanning over them can cause a lot of pain. Hopefully you won't end up with bruises! What were you having it done for? Hope it comes back good for you.

My surgeon wants you to have an ultrasound of the liver and gallbladder prior to surgery. I'm used to laying on the table and saying, "there's the heartbeat" or "is that a foot?" while getting an ultrasound- I wasn't expecting that! LOL!

I just got home from mine about 2 hours ago. I really did not have any pain.. She made me turn etc, and def. spent some time in the rib area(for a liver/), but it was not even uncomfortable for me. Bad news is that when I had my hysterectomy, they did not take my gallbladder. My dt. said he would take it out when he does my sleeve..Wonder if that will prolong recovery? Anyway, so sorry you are in pain...I cannot belive how many screenings we have to have prior to even being approved!! even with indsurance these add up!!

As far as I know, it does not prolong recovery. I had mine out too while they were in there for my sleeve. I had gall stones that I didn't know about. I'm pretty sure I was having symptoms that I didn't connect with my gallstones- no back pain since surgery! I am SO glad he took it out! One less thing to worry about going bad! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
