Constipated... What else can I do? TMI

Recommended Posts

So I have been doing great post sleeve up until the last 2 days. I was having a BM every other day since surgery up until about 5 days ago. It has been 5 days since my last BM and I am getting seriously backed up to the point that its very painful. I have been taking a stool softener, milk of magnesia and today my first suppository. Nothing seems to be working and I seriously feel I might hurt myself if I try and push it out.

Any other ideas?

Once this passes what should I be doing/easting to prevent this from happening again?

I know I need more Fiber in my diet but can anyone give me some examples... I don't want to add to many carbs to my diet so please keep that in mind.

thank you

Milk of Magnesia has worked great for me. Maybe you need a bigger dose? I take it at night before bed and it's perfect. You could try a Fleet enema. I also use Konsly powder added to my Protein Shakes. It doesn't have any carbs.

Try Senokot S - It has stool softener and Gentle natural laxative. Also add Benefiber to your Water or Protein Shakes. Its soluble Fiber and you cant taste it at all. I just had a Tummy Tuck and prevented alot of Constipation with the Senokot S since pain meds tend to constipate. Good luck!

Ok if you are impacted you might want to try an enema if you try that "hold" it in for a little while if you can... If that doesn't work it might have to be "manually" dealt with by a doctor sorry

Mike for a while there I was only going every couple of days.

I tried adding a fibre suppliment, but it didn't do the trick.

I got a vitamix a week ago, and I've been having a green smoothie everyday. It's as regular as it was 'back in the day'. You could set your watch too it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
