Having second thoughts!

Recommended Posts

I am having second thought about the surgery. I am nervous about getting it done and my parents keep telling me not to get it done. Thy are afraid something is going to happen to me during or after surgery. Since they are not fully supportive right now its giving me second thoughts and becoming afraid of what can happen. Has anyone gone through this? Idk what to do.

Is your surgery scheduled? It all depends on how you feel. Your age, your bmi, etc...you do what you need to do for you!

We all went through this! I decided that the benefits of extending my life for my kids far outweighed the risks and I stopped dwelling on the negatives and what ifs! You chose to start the process because you really felt this was your only option, think of where you will be in a year if you have it and if you don't. Also, remember we could all be hit by a mack truck crossing the street and we don't think about that when we take a step off the curb. This is your body, not your families, when they see how your confidence and self-esteem blossom, they will tell you how sorry they were for trying to hold you back.

If you (and not what others are telling you) really are having second thoughts, then start writing your thoughts down to try to work them out. I would almost bet you will choose to go through the surgery. We are all here for you whatever decision you make to help you through!

You are welcome! This really helps me sometimes when my brain goes into ADD mode and won't budge from the merry-go-round in my head!

My surgery is the same date. Any time I get nervous, I just picture my children without a mother. That is what will happen if I don't change my lifestyle. This surgery is a wonderful tool that will help with that change. Good luck. Everything will be fine.

Thank you Crickee writing my thoughts down sounds like a good idea. This might help me.

I remember a few patients here on VST who said they cancelled their surgery and then decided to do it a few months later.... I really think everyone goes through the same thoughts. My family and friends all had the same reaction. I always explained my reasoning and looked at them dead on and said..

I am doing this. I KNOW this is what is right for me. I understand all your concerns and I've had the same concerns and I have done all my homework. You know me - I don't take major decisions lightly -- I KNOW THIS IS RIGHT FOR ME...

They all eventually just accepted it and embraced it with me...

Remember, 98% of patients go through the surgery and recovery with no issues.. of course there is always the possibility of complications with ANY surgery, but the risk is small. Follow YOUR head and YOUR heart.

I know exactly how you feel. I am scheduled for surgery on March 7th also. My original surgery date was December 26th, but I let my fears get the best of me. I'm glad I took the extra time to educate myself about the procedures and risks. Now, I'm ready for the new me, physically and mentally!

It's your life, so make your own decision!

I know how you feel! My primary doc, the bariatric doc, the NUT, the PA all called me(I'm a doc) to try to talk me out of doing the surgery. The surgeon spent Almost

2 hours with me going over the risks and recommending alternatives. I've followed this website for two months and read complaints after complaints about complications. It is really a hard decision to listen to professionals warning me and the sad stories of complications vs the majority of success stories. I am sick of being the largest person in the room, but am also respectful of my colleagues concerns

My surgery is March 12. I try not to think about what "could" go wrong. If we all did that about everything, nobody would ever leave their house, have a baby, or even take a shower (what if you slip and hit your head and die?)! My family is kind of supportive, but also worried for me. They know its a good thing for me, but of course they don't want anything to go wrong. In the end its your decision. I choose the "risk" of surgery for the pay off of having a healthy, happy, thin, energetic, prolonged life :)

Why were all those medical professionals trying to talk you out of it?

Why were all those medical professionals trying to talk you out of it?

I was wondering the same thing! Major red flag!! No health care professional has done anything but encourage ne to have it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
