I also have RA and I'm on methotrexate. Do u have to take ibuprofrin every day? I know what its like to have a flare up :( I also have been on prilosec for years and had an endoscopy done prior to surgery. The doctor said I have gastritis and a hiatal hernia (which he repaired during the sleeve surgery). My acid reflux is actually better after the surgery. As far as being on prozac for years....I too have been on depression meds for years and being sleeved did nothing as far as worsening my depression.

Angelamaria...do you take an anti tnf? I've not been told to stop mine. I've stopped the mobic and wont resume for 4 weeks. I have erosive gastritis and I am concerned. I take 2 20 mg prilosec a day. They do the egd the day of surgery....pisses me off there's a chance they will wake me and say it's a no go after a year of this crap! LOL

I fuse and you fall apart! LOL I take humira and mobic and can really tell the difference and mu surgeon wont send ne home with stronger pain meds!!!! I hate feeling like I am seeking drugs!

I like your description :) The prescription pain meds I have tried (hydrocodone) just seem to make me tired and itchy. I keep hoping that weight loss will help with the pain because they say that the fat cells cause a lot of inflammation. I am going to ask my rheumatologist for some alternatives, but have never found anything really helpful in the past. I don't want to get hooked on stronger drugs - but I guess that may be what it takes. Good luck with your ankylosing spondylosis and your surgeon - I am rooting for you!

I am on Enbrel. I thought it was really interesting when I found out that fat tissue produces lots of TNF... I wonder if my surgeon would let me take mobic after 4 weeks - I could definitely handle 4 weeks without NSAIDs if I would let me get my life back. I really hope they clear you after your EGD

My surgeon is letting my use topical NSAIDS. I've got valtaren gel and flector Patches. . They've helped me a lot! I have one on the bottom if my foot now!

I'm so encouraged by this (that your depression didnt get worse - that's 2 for 2 on the responses) :) I do take ibuprofen every day. If I don't have to work or get around, I can make do with tylenol. I have gastritis and a hiatal hernia, too. Did you have a large hernia? Mine is really small so she wasnt sure if correcting it would help with the reflux or not.

Enbrel, humira, remicade, etc. ..

No I'm not...the methotrexate works for me. I'm on the highest dose of that so if my RA gets any worse that would be the next step. I better go knock on some wood now :P

I actually feel my depression is better after losing some weight! And you know.....my doc never mentioned to me the size of the hernia sorry! I just know that it hurt to swallow after surgery and they told me that was from the repair.

I do not have RA, but I do have a few issues that require steroids to control them as well as take ibuprofen often (mostly daily). I also had GERD pre- surgery and I have not had a single issue post sleeve. My surgeon is not anti-NSAID. His teams view the risk is so slight of complications (ulcers) the benefits outweigh the risks by far (especially in my case). My mom and good friend suffer from arthritis and RA respectively- they have had great relief with a lotion from a company called two old goats. It has seriously helped them a lot. My mom ran out yesterday and called me this morning saying how bad her shoulder hurt and then called this afternoon to say she was feeling much better once she got more of her lotion :).

I had a hernia repaired and mine was very small, but caused me MUCH grief in the GERD dept!

All of us who go through insurance have a whole bunch of hoops to jump through. The doctor wants you to get the surgery...just wants to be safe. When there is a will there is a way...just do all of the appointments. Keep on trecking! :)

I suffer from arthritis, bursitis and fibromyalgia... pain pain and pain... and my psych eval deemed me depressed but that did not exclude me from surgery... I got stalled in my exercises because of the arthritis/bursitis... but I have to say that for the most part, I am feeling better...mentally, physically and emotionally... Don't give up... don't lose hope...we all have our "issues" ... know you're not alone...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
