What's the best way to take meds!

Recommended Posts

I was banded Monday, and this morning was my first time to crush and take the unrelated pills that I need to take. What a horrible taste! I tried them in some fruit juice and it was awful! Are there any tricks that you know out there?????

:help:

I thankfully don't take prescription medicine, but on occasion if I have to take a pill rather than crushing it, I chop it into small pieces using the blade in the pill crusher. For a pill the size of an aspirin, I'll cut it into 4 pieces.

All the meds I take can be crushed so crushed they are. I take them on a tablespoon and put a little Water on the spoon. I get it to a paste like and take it with a couple sips of coffee. Luckily my pills don't seem to have a aftertaste, just gritty. I've also tried taking them with my activia, but find the spoon method best for me.

My doctor wants all meds crushed forever so I try to comply. I don't want to get stuck on a pill.

I know at my grandmothers nursing home, they crush all her meds and mix them with applesauce or yogurt and she will take it, any other way, she spits it out. So, it must work. :peep:

I don't have any prescription meds, so that makes my life a little easier.

For pain I take liquid tylenol. For sinus pain I take liquid tylenol with a sidekick of liquid benadryll.

I did get a preventative liquid anti-nausea from my PCP to keep on hand, just in case.

Before I found the liquid tylenol I tried mashing them into appleasuce. Uh-uh. No way, no how. Nastyyy.

I tried to get the liquid out of a stool softener capsule once, and mix it into apple juice. After about 4 hours when my mouth and throat quit burning, it was another 2 or 3 before feeling came back. So I learned that t'was not one of my better ideas.

Oh yeah - the chewable Tylenol, assuming that's the "On the Go" or whatever it's called, that's supposed to be a mint flavored big huge mother of a pill. Tried those last week while on vacation. Probably the 4th or 5th grossest thing I've ever "eaten". The first few chews are ok because it's kind of a weird subtle mint. Every chew after that sucks money butts because it's this nasty bitter poo that someone tried to make taste like mint.

From now on I'll just make the extra baggage room for my trusty bottle of liquid tylenol. Cherry is the better of the two flavors, IMO. The vanilla tastes more like -- not vanilla.< /p>

I take 9 pills in the AM, one in the afternoon and 4 at night. I take a bite of a pretzel stick and chew it up and, right before I swallow, I put the pill in and down it goes. Large ones I do solo and smaller ones I do 3 at a time. I've never had a problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
