Giving up Diet Soda

Recommended Posts

So in preparation for surgery, I've decided to stop drinking Diet Coke. Not an easy thing for sure! I know the carbonation isn't a good idea after surgery. I've been able to give it up for short periods of time before (ie 40 days without for lent) but I've always gone back to it. I think it's extremely additive!

I'd love some tips/advice on how to make this major change. I've been drinking this stuff for 25 years, and I'm sure it's been part of the reason I've gained weight. Also, are there any other types of foods that are a permanent no-no with a sleeve?

Thanks,

Jennifer

I was the same way with Mountain Dew. I quit drinking it before Christmas in preparation of the surgery. How did I do it? I decided one day that it was my last one. I knew I needed to stop drinking it. It wasn't easy. The cravings are STILL there and I have to be aware of by habits. I drink a lot of Water now too and that helps.

I was drinking 7 to 8 a day. I went off with my preop. Diet. It was hard first couple of days but after 2 weeks, I don't miss the diet cokes . I sure am hungry though! Some say they are not so hungry after 4 or 5 days ...not me. Decaf tea helps more than anything, that and Water water eater

Do you need to give up all caffeine post surgery? I'm currently drinking unsweetened iced tea (with caffeine). I had a huge headache yesterday from withdrawals, but doing pretty good today.

My nut said no Caffeine .... It is like smoking, in that it keeps you from healing. I've give up caffeine with the wit cokes. I'm not a coffee drinker.

My doc says caffeine is fine, but soda is not...I'm working on cutting back on diet coke pre-surgery as well, down to 2 a day and will cut that back to 1 soon. It will save a lot of $$ too! :)

My suggestion? Cold turkey. I was drinking at LEAST 5 diet cokes a day. Most days more like 7. This was for the past 20 yrs or so. This is my 1 week mark without a drop of any soda. I had one last day of it, and said no more. Im quitting it BEFORE I start the pre op diet. Everything at once may just be too overwhelming. I got the mio stuff for Water w caffeine, and still drinking tea from time to time. I just don't think I can't give up caffeine TOO. My dr doesn't say I have to do that. I actually already feel better after 1 week of no aspartame (im giving up all artificial sweeteners as well...no reason to go thru surgery and all this to get healthy if im going to kill myself with chemicals right?)

Yes the ones with caffeine are usually in a black container. When I need it I drink a bottle or two of Water with caffeinated mio in the AM. It helps a lot.

I actually got the great value brand from Walmart. Its cheaper but basically the same. The berry one is the best tasting one to me. It also has b-vitamins!

I do the same! Out dollar general also carries a few flavors...

I suggest putting the container in a ziplock bag if carrying it with you...

I have had one bust in my pocket and one bust in my purse... Not a fun mess to clean up...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
