My surgeon told me if the liver was too fatty he wouldn't do it laparoscopic and he would instead make a long incision from your chest down your stomach, has any had this happen? I haven't seen any posts about it on here so I'm just curious

My surgeon said the same thing but after my pre-op diet my liver had shrunken enough so he didnt have to cut me open. I was happy about that. Just follow the preop diet and you should be fine. good luck!

Ive heard of a lot of surgeons saying this. I think it's a precaution on their part, so that you know it could have to be done....as well as to let you know that he means business when it comes to your pre op diet. Good luck! :)

Most people don't want to risk having a more invasive surgery or the surgery cancelled altogether (the more common possibility). They literally have to move the liver out of the way to get at your stomach and livers are pretty delicate to start with. Highly fatty livers risk more tears and bleeding, so it's best just to stick with the pre op plan so that all goes well.

He didnt put me on one either! I even asked about it and told him I had read others being on one and he said not to worry. Although I don't want the big scar, so I've started eating better but my surgery is 8 days away so I'm afraid I'm too late

My surgeon ordered a reasonable pre-op diet. In the manual he handed out to patients, it was supposed to be for one or two weeks prior to surgery. I followed it (more or less) for one week before. Another girl in my office did not even pretend to follow it. Two days before surgery, I saw her at her desk eating a huge pile of hot wings, french fries and drinking a huge coke. Her surgery was not cancelled and neither of us had to be converted to open incision.

I dieted by choice as soon as I started going to the weight loss center I went too. When I got sleeved on 1/28 I had lost 25lbs already but I didn't have any special preop diet, and I kinda celebrated my last weekend enjoying my favorite foods..... And the did mine without opening me up.

No, your not too late! My pre-op diet was only 10 days, but I researched why we have to do the pre-op diet and found the same info everyone else is posting. I also found that eating low carb for just 3-4 days before surgery would have a significant impact on reducing the fat around your liver.

In my opinion I wouldn't allow my surgeon to cut me wide open the surgery it's self it's hard enough ..if he won't operate laparoscopic I would find another just an opinion don't have to take my advice and then no pre op diet your surgeon said to help shrink ur liver but hell do open if it has too much fat it seem he would have you do one just to help .. I just hope your surgeon don't do open ..good luck I'm praying for u

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
