What exactly is grazing?

Recommended Posts

Is eating every 2-3 hours grazing? I am supposed to eat 5 small meals a day and I worry that I may be "grazing". I read how it is bad and slows weight loss so this makes me nervous! How do you define grazing?

Grazing is when you just sit there and eat. You are not really hungry. It is something usually done when watching TV or driving. Many people do it out of boredom. You eat to just eat and not because your body is hungry.

i think the danger in grazing is people don't realize how many calories they are taking in on a given day. You are supposed to eat every 2-3 hours. Ive been told to have 3 meals and two Snacks. I think the difference is mainly that your meals and snacks are planned, weighed out and calculated where as grazing you are just kind of going through the day picking here and there. The serving portions and calories just run away from you.

I think if you make good, healthy, low calorie, high Protein choices, then grazing won't cause weight gain.

Grazing.... It's kinda like.....have you ever seen a cow in a meadow? With its head down moving spot to spot eating?? That grazing!

Good points! This makes sense. Thanks, LL!

Grazing is popping something small in your mouth every time you pass by the kitchen. A handful of nuts here, a few grapes there. a squirt of whipped cream directly into mouth...

It's eating little things all day like grazing animals like cows do... as opposed to say, Lions, who eat until they're satisfied and then stop and don't eat anymore until their next kill.

All of the above.

It's typically mindless eating.

I eat 6 times a day. I generally know what each meal will be. I decide how much based on how hungry I am at the time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
