I'm sorry to hear you're having a bit of a difficult time. I wish I had some advice to offer, but I'm pre-vsg. Have you spoken to your surgeon's office? Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

There is a good chance your "hunger" is actually acid. It can feel like extreme hunger -- a very empty gnawing feeling. A PPI like Prilosec or Prevacid can help! Mine started about 3 or 4 weeks after surgery ...I was already on Prilosec ( my doc prescribes to everyone before surgery but some docs don't do that) but added Zantac, which helped.

Call your doc!

At 5 weeks I was ravenous, all of a sudden. Even after a meal. Had been taking Prevacid daily since surgery. Changed to nexium twice a day, and had immediate relief.

It was sudden for me too. In fact, I posted on VST that I was starving suddenly and everyone convinced me that it wasn't hunger but acid. I'm going to try the Nexium --- taking the Zantac ( in addition to my Prevacid 2x daily) has helped but not completely. Maybe the Nexium will wipe it out.

Yup, when my stomach acid issues were at their worst (with my stricture) I felt hungry all the time.

I've been on Nexium and its really good. Now I only take it if I am having problems and it works really fast.

Is that the only symptom of acid that you feel hungry?

No, if you get acid coming up you'll recognize it instantly. It's about as vile a thing as you can have in your esophagus/throat, and if you inhale it, you're in for one of the worst experiences. It's generally bright yellow and burns like hell.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
