6 month supervised diet

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I have a question for all of you that had to do the 6 month supervised diet for your insurance.

Did you lose weight? If so, how much?

I guess I should just keep eating well and exercising and not worrying about the scale but my PCP mentioned that the insurance companies do this to see if you really can follow a plan and lose weight. I've lost 12 pounds but now don't seem to be losing. I hate that I feel so stressed over this....like I better lose or they'll deny me. Ugh! Sorry....just needed to vent and see how others did.

Thanks for listening!

Hi, I had to lose 7 pounds but was able to lose 14 about 2 months ago and hadn't lost anymore. As long as you meet their requirement you'll be fine. I start my liquid pre op diet in 2 days for a week and hope to lose some more. the 6 months will fly and creep by. Since it is a serious surgery, I think the 6 months was good for me. It allowed me timeto really let it sink in on what I was doing that I have no regrets and am ready for it.

I guess I'll double check on my next appt but I wasn't given an amount to lose.

Good luck on your pre op diet and your surgery! :)

They wanted me to lose 11lbs before surgery. I've lost 21lbs in the last 6 months. I'm really struggling to stay on track this week, because this is my last week before my preop diet. I start preop 2/19 & surgery 2/26.

I haven't lost any at all :( ....I've been mostly maintaining, or bouncing between 268-272lbs. I submit my paperwork next month...so in the next 45 days, I want to try to lose at least 7lbs to show that I put forth an effort. Every time I get weighted in at the dietitian appointments, she doesn't seem too concerned with my lack of weight loss. I think you've done awesome so far...I wouldn't stress about it! :)

I was told to lose 3-5lbs during my 3 mo. required diet. But I followed all the NUT rules and I'm down 38 lbs. still waiting on surgery date.

I lost 21 pounds by choice. My insurance approval is by BMI and the 6 months waiting period with nutritional visits. I had heard Dr. required losing at least 10 lbs to shrink liver but my Dr told me when I asked that he lowers the head of the table which moves liver out of the way and makes surgery easier. I was told its good to lose but as long as you maintain you can get approval. Not sure if this applies to all as most insurances seem to look for any reason not to pay. Im fotunate that my insurance pays 100% once deductible is met. Just have to have a BMI over 50 I think it is. My insurance changed it after I had started but I still met it and got approval first time after my last nutritional appointment. I had my last appointment on the 18th of January and got approval and surgery date of February 27th.

Per my insurance BCN it said that I should be on a diet that enabled me to lose 1-2 lbs. a week for the 6 months so for 2 weeks each month I would drink Protein shakes. I lost 17lbs. My insurance also says that you have to lose at least 100lbs. for them to pay for plastics for your stomach so I was not trying to lose a lot. I completed my last weigh in Jan. 16 and I could not get a surgery date until March 18th.

Care First Blue Choice is my insurance company. I've been going through Meritus Weight Loss Center, and they have been fantastic to work with and handled everything. I did my 6 months nutritional visits and lost maybe 8 lbs. I have lost a total of 21 now but got approval prior to losing the other 13 lbs. I hope and pray you all are able to get approval! Keep fighting and don't give up till you get approval!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
