Medical Alert Bracelets

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

Being in the medical field my mind automatically goes to post op/emergency medical type complications after surgery.

Does any wear/been instructed to wear a medical alert Bracelet or necklace?

Thanks! :)

Nikki

I was never instructed to wear one. I think I've seen a post about people getting them because of the stomach restriction, but my surgeon never said anything about it being medically necessary.

I got info in my surgical materials but it was pretty vague. I've looked at a few websites to see what the options are. I generally do not wear jewelry so I know a Bracelet isn't for me, I don't think I would consistently wear it. I have thought about a pendant/necklace. NikkiV, do medical personnel look for medical necklaces?

I got one at the medical supply store they had a bariatric sticker to put on it along with the other med. things so I had mine engraved with gastric sleeve on it,you dont want someone sticking some thing down your throut trying to get to your tummy better safe than sorry, Debi

I have a really nice medical alert pendant that I wear on a long chain inside my clothing. It is for diabetes and I hope to not need it anymore at some point! It looks like jewelry, but I do believe it would be noticed by medical personnel. The website is www.StickyJ.com. I will talk to my MD about whether I need one for the sleeve.

Yes I do. I am a paramedic and there are times when a patient cannot talk or communicate effectively with me. We look on the patient, in the pockets, and in the wallet for information.

That being said a piece of paper with your medical history, allergies, and medications on it does wonders!! :)

My surgeon said a medical alert Bracelet or necklace is not medically necessary for the VSG so I did not get one, no reason to.

That's kind of what I was thinking. If something happened and you needed a NG tube (in your nose and into your stomach) having a vsg is something I'd like known.

I got a wallet card from my surgeon, that's good to know!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
