Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Starting back tomorrow, tried a test run today and didn't hack too bad. I think I can do it.

Fantastic!

Get this - I'm scared to run outside! I'm pretty tied to my treadmill (single mom of a 4yr old) and I COULD have run outside on Saturday and I totally chickened out. I'm afraid I won't be able to do it at all outside or that someone will see me trying to run. I'd pulled down the city map of paths and everything... one of these days I'm going to get outside though. It's beautiful running weather where I live' date=' so I've got no excuse when I don't have my son with me.

Hey, you are not alone. I feel that way too.I have a little agoraphobia only because I don't want to find out my time will slow down when running outside. Easy to control all the dynamics of proper form, breathing, etc when running on treadmill. And I love my trusty treadmill too much. :) I know now I am going to get a lecture from BTB now that I have said that. :)

That is the nemesis of exercise isn't it? A short break because of the weather, or injury, or what ever ...........

The sooner you get back into it the less fitness you'll lose! ;)

Finished week 2 day 3 this morning.

I won't say it felt good doing it. I felt great once it was finished!

Week 5, day 1... done! On the treadmill, but no matter! Not too bad but I've got to get my music updated to my phone. It's a little freaky how much faster it goes when you've got a good song to sing along with.

You're darn tootin! Last week I busted my ass twice tripping over roots on a gnarly trail at Huntsville state park. And in my mind, when I fall I've got 400 pounds still falling with me to break every bone in my body. But the reality is, I'm much lighter and fitter now and I just bounced back up....said a few choice words to that root's mother....and kept going.

A certain amount of form does get washed away on the trail when you're constantly stepping over things, constantly ascending or descending hills and twisting left and right....ducking branches and dodging thorn bushes. But all that is what keeps it so exciting.

Do you worry about being "hooked" on running and any potential muscle lose?

I wanted to come back to this post after just having done my first real organized race last weekend. There were 15,000 runners total in the 5K and the 10K. And I can say without a shadow of a doubt, there was every size and shape of humanity out there running. Now granted, the lead pack, yes they were all tiny, skinny, long legged people. But you have to ask yourself....are they skinny because they run so much or can they run so much because they are skinny? I doubt any of them ever weighed 300 lbs. I saw many muscled up strong men running as well as quite a few senior citizens running even faster. You truly cannot tell who's the better runner just by looking at them but you can bet that runners can manage to add lean body mass or reduce it depending on their personal goals and abilities. So my point is, I wouldn't decide not to run based on a fear of losing lean body mass. Even if you lost a couple of percentage points of muscle, the cardiovascular benefit would far out weigh any small loss in strength.

I have only ran outside a handful of times. I have a lot of the same fears as you. I have set a goal to run a half marathon in 18 mos though so I will have to get over that. I figure a year to lose all my weight and a 6 mos to train. Hope it's a realistic goal.

Did it! Week 1 Day 1 repeat in the books. Wasn't bad at all, hardly hacked, but was ready to be done when I got off the treadmill. Just short of 2 miles. Even went and knocked out 25 more minutes on the elliptical trainer. Was just the boost I needed to get back at it hard. scale has been flat for the last couple of weeks while taking Prednesone.

Ok, once again you are amazing! Here I am wondering if I'll be able to pull off a 5k and you're talking half marathon! I so admire your ambition and belief in yourself.

The point you've made that I get is if you're running, you're fit, healthy and it's keeping you at goal - who gives a flying $%^& if you lose a couple of % of muscle!

That's great.

I don't have a treadmill. I get why some people need them. I live in a sub tropical area on the Water. I love the fresh air and the scenery passing me by.

You've got a great attitude. I'm sure you're going to nail this half marathon!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
