Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

First run since gallbladder surgery today. I only did a quick 3k in 20 minutes. Could have gone longer but I was pressed for time. Finally that incision is healing up and it felt good!

Welcome back. It's good to see you here. I'm sure you're better health was another reason why you healed so quickly and so well.

Life got in the way of me finishing week 8 last Friday so I did it today!!! I finished the program and ran for 30 minutes straight!!! I was no where near 5k at the end but that will come. I'm signed up for a race in March... I have until then to increase my speed/ distance. Where's my running buddy? Jumping back in? Did you finish?

Congratulations! I also had a off week last week and just finished W8D3 today but I finished it! Like you it was not a 5K but I did two and three-quarter miles. I'm supposed to do a race this Saturday but it's supposed to be 18°. I'm a little apprehensive and on top of that I'm supposed to also have my three-year-old grandson with me. I've never pushed a jogging stroller before and add to that the low temperature degree I'm thinking I may walk a couple miles instead. Will see what today holds.

Happy hump day everyone!

Week 3 day 1 is done and still feeling great. Could this app really work. It seems unbelievable to me that I could actually run for say 20 minutes in a few weeks. I always had great admiration for runners and aspired (unsucessfully) to be one. I think it is probably the single most efficient exercise to burn calories/fat from your body.

Just finished Week 2, Day 2 and I'm finding it hard to believe that I can actually do this. I ran a little more each time, and was shocked I could do more than the app even asked for. Crazy.

Watch out. You're turning into a runner. It sneaks up on you. :)

I love reading everyone's posts! You all are so inspiring. Supposed to have a 5k this Saturday but it's supposed to be 18 degrees and I have my 3 yr old grandson. Still debating about what to do. I know he could walk a mile or more but do I want him out in this stuff?

be careful running in 18 degree weather. I had a bit of an issue yesterday when running fast in 25 degree weather.

I ran in much colder weather than that when I lived in Indiana. Do a warm-up run a couple hours early if possible. You can get a scarf or neck wrap to breathe through to help with the cold air if you have trouble with that, but you probably won't after you are warmed up. Also you will probably be happiest in tights on bottom and layers on top (a synthetic or thin wool or silk shirt like thermal underwear, followed by a sweatshirt which you can remove). When you get moving you won't feel cold anymore. Wear a ski cap on your head. If your ears get cold you can pull it over them. Also moisturizer on your face and Chapstick on your lips, especially if it is windy. Gloves are good. But really, I always found running in the cold quite pleasant after I got started. It was just the getting out the door that was hard.

I am a runner.

That is so me!! My husband likes to say jog instead of run and I'm about ready to kick him out!

I am so behind on catching up on my message threads! I have seriously fallen off the rails in the last week. My last run was on Thanksgiving on board a cruise ship. I ran a 10K twice on the ship's jogging track (23 laps if you're interested!). Since I got home I have been swamped with work. I've worked 75 hours since Monday, pulled one all nighter and two nights until 3am. I am seriously beat! I still have a lot of work to do this weekend, so it's not over yet, but one major deliverable is done (I'm a training design/developer). I have to get the next one done by the beginning of next week and hoping it goes smoothly because I have a video shoot near Atlantic City the week after. I am exhausted just thinking about it!

I love that everyone is staying with the program! I have thought about how the goals for running and weight loss are similar. There are certain things that you have to do for each to reach your goals. For running, staying on a regular program, getting plenty of rest and fluids, and keeping good form to prevent injuries are key to reaching your goals. For weight loss, I have only three things that I must do... get over 60g of Protein, drink over 60ou of Water, and get over 60 min of exercise. I call it my 60/60/60 plan. Since surgery in January I have stuck with it and it's worked for me. My goal for weight loss has been 175lbs (I'm 5'11"). I'm almost there (around 183 right now) and may adjust my goal once I get there. My goal for running has changed though as I've accomplished each one. I first started off with the goal to finish the C25K program and a 5K (running the whole way). Then I wanted to run a 10K the whole way. Now my goal is to run a half marathon in February.

I have no doubt that I will accomplish both goals, but I've recently been thinking what happens after that?? Especially with the weight loss goals. I think I will sort of miss that sense of accomplishment every week when I weigh in and see that I've lost weight. For those of you at goal, has that been tough for you?

I think I'll have the same issue with running. Once I finish the half, I don't want to run a marathon, so I can't think of other goals that will feel as accomplished. I'd like to keep running races, but mainly 5 and 10K, and try to improve my times, but those seem to be rather insignificant. I have a friend that runs the Ragnar Relay each year, so that may be in my plans if I can get my per mile pace down to 11:00. Maybe we could put together a WLS team? That would be cool.

What kind of goals do you all have after you finish the program?

I'm running the Disney Princess Half Marathon in February. I am so thankful to be able to run that I decided to use my run to raise money for charity. I am running to raise money for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). TAPS offers charity running throughout the country and enables you to run in memory of a military personnel that has lost their life in combat. I am truly honored to be running in memory of Marine Cpl. Ronald R. Payne, Jr. 23, of Lakeland, Florida. Cpl. Payne died May 8, 2004 due to hostile action in the vicinity of Tawara, Afghanistan. He was the first Marine killed in action in Afghanistan. More info: http://ron-payne.memory-of.com/About.aspx TAPS provides direct support to families who have been impacted by a death in the military regardless of geography or circumstance. The funds I raise will flow directly into TAPS programming which supports these families through an amazing network of resources, seminars and publications. If you're interested in donating for my run, send me a PM. Thanks!

I'm also running the Disney Princess 5K the same weekend. If you're looking for a great goal to set, running a Disney 5K is amazing. Some of the races even take you through the park. The first 5K that I ever ran was the Disney Princess 5K in 2009. The race course goes around Epcot and is so much fun! Would love to run with some of my WLS friends!

Had to have a honest moment with myself today and will be going back to week 6 and redoing the last few weeks of the program. Trying to run a full 30 min every "run day" now that I graduated is quickly zapping my moral, and I feel like I need to make this a program I can stay on. I am excited I was able to make it to the full 30... But am really struggling to stay at that level. Think backing up and working my way back to this point will help me get excited again, with some attainable wins... and at the same time continue to prep my body for the next step... Any of you vets ever do something like that??? Does it help???

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
