Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Recommended Posts

I've been doing it for a couple weeks now. Just completed week 3 day 3 today. I love it & have discovered an "inner runner" in the process. I'm registered for a 5k in June and I find myself wondering....is this program REALLY going to have me ready by the end? I mean, i hear about tons of people "starting" the program, but I don't know if I've seen anyone who actually went from not running to completing the program & running a 5k. Grated I didn't read all 120 pages of this thread...lol. I guess I'll just trust the process.

There have been quite a few on this thread that have made it through the program and were able to run a 5K. I got addicted to running and have been challenging myself to go further.

All training programs do is get you to the point of running the whole race. The C25K apps will get you to 30 min of running. If you're on the slow side (like me), you might need to keep adding minutes at the end to feel ready. My first 5K took me 45 min, so I wasn't ready when I finished the program, but I kept on training and adding in a minute or two per week until I could run the whole race. My next one was 38 min and the next was 36 min.

My half marathon training plan only went to 10 miles. I didn't feel I could run the whole 13 miles, so I added another 11 mile run before my half. When I ran my first half I was able to run the whole thing even though I hadn't run a half in practice. Your adrenaline will enable you to push yourself through. As long as you stay at a maintainable pace, your body can push through and finish.

The app does work. Just push yourself even if you feel can't do it push past the discomfort. Usually if you slow your pace down it is do able. If you can't complete a day it is ok to repeat that day. I never ran before starting in Nov 2013 now I can run for 40 minutes straight it is unbelievable to me. Also keep us posted on your progress. It is so helpful coming back to this thread and discussing progress, questions, tips etc.

I just started this week. I am doing a 5k walk/run at the end of April. I have no illusions of running it, I just want to be able to walk it and finish it.

How's your progress? :)

I've been running "on my own" without a coaching program for a few weeks trying to up my pace a bit after finishing C25k. I have a set route around our house that's 4.5k. Not quite up to 5k but darn close!

Signed up for my first official 5k event at the end of April so my goal is to be up to the fill distance by then!

On week 2 day 2... It's definitely challenging for me! I tried doing outside instead of on the treadmill and it hurt my knees more. Maybe I should stick to treadmill?!

Started C25K in Feb 2013 and this thread was a great source of information and support (surgery was 1/13). Did my 3rd half marathon today (OKC Memorial). It's awesome to see how far I've come and it was great to have my family there to Celebrate. For those of you starting out... Anything is possible if you persevere. I'm 48 and have a bad knee, but I run using the Chi running style and wear zero drop shoes. I run slow but I can run the whole 13 miles now.

That's awesome, and very encouraging for Someone like me in the beginning stages of c25k! I will have to look up the chi running style- never heard of it but my knees are kinda bad tll

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
