Finished first in the first annual Norwegian Epic Turkey Trot 10K. Doesn't matter that I was the only one running it! that makes two 10Ks this week! I am feeling unstoppable!

Way to set the example!!

I've got a really good ebook about shin splints I can send you when I get back to land. It saved me a few years ago when I was ready to stop running because of them.

Thanks so much!

It is an app. There are several different ones but plenty free ones to choose from.

Congrats on the weight loss!

Couch to 5K (aka C25K) is a training program that can take you from sitting on the couch to running a 5K in as little as 8 weeks (depending on how fast you run).

There are many apps that help you with the program. I use Run 5K because it was one of the first apps available the first time I followed the program in 2009.

To find any of the apps search for "Couch to 5K" in the App Store for your phone.

Ok, so finished week 2 day 2 today and felt like I could keep running. It was liberating. Thanks to those who encouraged running outside. For some reason you feel like a superman or woman. I felt like a real runner. I know its still early going and I will be very challenged later along but for now its great.

First run since gallbladder surgery today. I only did a quick 3k in 20 minutes. Could have gone longer but I was pressed for time. Finally that incision is healing up and it felt good!

Life got in the way of me finishing week 8 last Friday so I did it today!!! I finished the program and ran for 30 minutes straight!!! I was no where near 5k at the end but that will come. I'm signed up for a race in March... I have until then to increase my speed/ distance. Where's my running buddy? Jumping back in? Did you finish?

Nice job. And do not expect to be running a 5K in 30 minutes. That's the one assumption that c25k makes that most people cannot do. It will come on time but not in week 8. No matter though. You've finished it and congrats on signing up for your first race.

Nice going...and very true. Running outside is so much more rewarding than a treadmill. It becomes less about exercise and more about exploring. Keep it up.

Question to those at or very near completion. I am running slower than my program is designed, e.g. the program says run 22 minutes or 2.25 miles. To run that distance, I would need to significantly increase my speed. How do you do that? I currently jog at 4.5 mph, the program is set up for 5 mph.

Don't worry about it. Speed will come with time. :)

Don't fret. That is a fault with the program. Very few people can run the speed they assume when you're first starting out. Perhaps if we were young and already in shape we could, but not us bigger runners. Just run the speed you can maintain and don't worry about how fast or slow you are. You will gradually get faster but it's important to build your aerobic base first. Trying to add speed too soon can lead to injury. I waited till I had been running 10 months before I tried any speed work. But honestly, when I did running ceased being fun and became a chore. I enjoy it too much to ruin it. I am still getting faster but my goal is really to increase distance not speed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
