Does anyone have any suggestions on how to save and or preserve food? I've been using ziplock bags and tupperware in the freezer but the quality isn't great since too much air gets in.

I've heard about vacuum sealers but they seem expensive and the bags are expensive. If you own one, would you suggest it? How has your experience been?

Any recommendations?

I love my food saver. I buy off brand pint size bags (like $30 for 300 on amazon).

For Soups I'll freeze it in an ice tray or similar. Once frozen, I take a few cubes and vaccume seal them.

Glad makes 4 ounce containers...Walmart carries them for about 2.57 for 8 of them or buy in bulk here:

http://www.amazon.com/GladWare-Round-4-Ounce-Containers-8-Count/dp/B000EGBLBM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360565910&sr=8-1&keywords=Glad+4+ounce

I like them because they are microwaveable, freezer safe etc and are portion controlled. Biggest complaint though is they don't stack well because of the lid when in use...like you cannot stack one on top of the other.

Our food Saver is a beast. I love the damn thing, I even put things that aren't even food in them just to play with it. I tried putting my dog in there once, but didn't want to explain what happened if she died to my wife so I backed out. As for food, it's been amazing. I put anything in them that I prepare ahead of time, date it, freeze it and I'm good to go. Like OTR said, you can buy bulk bags online for a lot cheaper than in the store. I did notice Wal Mart started carrying off brand bags too that are half the price of the Food Saver branded bags.

FoodSaver V3431 Vacuum Sealer Fresh Start Kit is the one we bought. We bought it at Wal Mart. We bought a hose for it so we can use the containers with it as well. I think it was $130 for the package.

I've got the one they sell at Sam's Club. Sorry I'm not sure of the model, but they only carry one style.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
