Excited and nervous about the band

Recommended Posts

I was told by my surgeons office that my medicare will pay 80% of the surgery and medicaid will pick up the 20%. I was so excited and made my initial visit appointment for December 14th. I am excited but nervous. Now that it seems like it is really going to happen I have mixed feelings. I keep going from really happy and excited to scared of what will happen after the surgery. Will everything go right? Will I have complications? This is such a big step. I am ready don't get me wrong. I am just nervous.

I was happy to hear I didn't have to come up with the 20% myself and that medicaid will pick it up.

What helped your nerves before you went in for surgery?:)

I had insurance problems for a year before my surgery. When I was finally approved it was like a bolt. I also went from excitement to OMG what am I doing? But I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Even complications with the band are relatively minor and most don't have any. I did, I have a tendency to swell and my stomach pretty much swelled closed right after surgery. I had to have an NG tube inserted for 3 days, but even though I'm not a real fast loser, I am so happy with the band and the weight I have lost so far. Until the band, I had given up all hope. I have been able to stop walking with a cane and my blood pressure is under control. I'm looking forward to the day I am off meds and I no longer have sleep apnea. Can't wait. Best of luck to you and don't worry, it will be fine.

You are feeling absolutely normal! I think everyone goes through the same feelings.

Keep in mond you are officially saying good-bye to a why of life that you have know for a very long time. It is scary. But it is so good. And you will realize shortly that your not saying good bye to your favorite things for ever just for a short time. You should be able to eat everything you always liked, just not as much. You'll also learn that it is ok to not eat it all and that it feels wonderful.

You do go through a type of mouring. I still do. I still get nervous at times, but it is all good.

Take a deep breath write down your feelings so you can look back at them later and perhaps help someone else feeling the same way.

As you know this is a wonderful website. We are all here for each other.

Sunsett, that was a good idea about writing a journal about my feelings and my journey with the band.

Thanks to both of you for the support and reasuurance that it is worth it.

Everyone on here is an inspiration. I can't wait to post my weight loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
