Quick question for Post_Op friends..?

Recommended Posts

So I'm scheduled for surgery on the 25th of February.. So my question is how soon can you travel in a plane? How soon do you start to feel good enough for a three hour flight?

A lot of people have their surgery in Mexico or in different parts of the country and fly home a couple days after surgery.

It's safe right away (I believe), but may be quite uncomfortable.

If you do go you need to walk alot on the plane or look up foot exercises for prevention of blood clots!

I had surgery Friday morning and had two flights to get back home Sunday. I wasn't in any pain (thanks to the meds) and was relatively comfy. You'll just need to make sure someone is there to help you with luggage because you won't be able to lift. I found I really had to push the flight attendant to help me. They really weren't at all concerned with what I couldn't do.

I flew from NC to New Mexico about less than 2 weeks out. Didn't have any problems at all.

I had my surgery in Mexico and flew home to Florida three days later. I let the flight attendants k ow I had just had surgery and they were very attentive to my needs. They even heated up the broth the doctor sent home with me so I would have something to eat on the flight.

I recommend taking a small pillow for your tummy, it really helped me on the plane to be more comfortable with something to support it.

I will deff be careful about the lifting so my aunt said she would pay someone.. Thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
