Anybody have second thoughts 4 days before surgery

Recommended Posts

Hellllp, I am 4 days away and am having second thoughts. I'm scared.. What if I can never go to a function and enjoy myself? What if I can never eat any of my favorite food (even if it's a tiny portion) ever again? What if I get malnourished due to the lack of caloric intake? Has anyone felt this? How did you talk yourself through it?

I am scared too, I think the same stuff, But.. What keeps me strong is all of the people that have gone before us and are enjoying themselves they are eating correctly. You can do it! Don' t chicken out before the best/ only opportunity for some of us to be healthy!!! You can do it!!! I pray to God!!

Its easy to have strong emotional feelings right before a major surgery like VSG. Take a deep breath and try to relax. There's nothing about the surgery that's ever going to prevent you from going out having a good time. There's nothing about the surgery that is going to prevent you from eating what ever you want. You may not be able to do so right after surgery, but in time, most folks are able to eat almost anything. Malnutrition doesn't come from lack of calories, it comes from lack of quality nutrients in the diet. In the American diet, this almost never, ever happens. The body does just fine on 500-800 calories a day as long as they have the proper amounts of Proteins, carbs and liquids. As you recover from the surgery you will get more calories added to your diet, and will in time be in a range that is appropriate to maintain a safe and healthy weight. There will be some initial discomfort from the surgery and there is a good possibility that you will feel like crap for a while. But none of that outweighs the benefits of being a more healthier, livelier person. Feeling bad for a short term, is nothing compared to the problems that obesity is or will bring you. You can do it, you've come this far. It won't be the easiest thing you do, but it won't be the hardest either. Good luck and hang in there. :)

I felt the same way it's normal to feel that way. I kept telling myself I would regret it if I didn't go through with it. You will be able to enjoy your favorite foods in time and in moderation. And u will be able to enjoy yourself at parties ect...U will get used to your new sleeve and be grateful for how it has changed your life for the better. Be strong. You can do this!!!

Hehehe... I didn't have second thoughts until they wheeled me into the operating room.. Shows how smart I was 0_o

But having "doubts" fears are normal for most people!

Yes it's going to change your life and your relationship with food, but that's what we need right?

You will go through healing and a restrictive diet for little while. But you will be able to eat again and yes you can eat some if you favorites again down the road..

I eat for the most part a strict diet, but I for the first time this weekend tried a piece of pizza!

It was fine I liked it. But I know now I don't want to eat it much because I love the weight loss and it doesn't have the same "pull" as it did before!

Many people have that reaction as well as some initial doubts right after surgery but before you know it you will be asking why didn't I do this sooner?

No second thoughts right now. I'm too excitited to get this surgery done and looking forward to the rest of my life. i look at this surgery as a gateway to being thinner, healthier and fully enjoying/engaging w/ life once again. W/ that perspective, I can't think about feeling scared, nervous or anxious.

I'm four days pre-op too. I'm so thankful that my insurance is paying that there's not going to be any second thoughts! I know this is the best decision for me. I do have lots of questions all of a sudden. Guess that's normal too. Feel like I'm about to give birth and might not have everything ready at home!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
