Hi everyone, I had Lapband done 5 years ago and did well losing 114 lbs. well a year ago my band slipped and I had to have it removed in November. I just had the sleeve done this past Thursday so I am 2 days pos-op, the problem I'm having is when I drink anything, Water, broth or pop sickles there is a pain that lasts just for a second but it's irritating so I don't think I'm getting as much fluids down as I should be at day 2, I've only had 18 oz of liquid so far today, is this pain or discomfort supposed to be like this?

You are only 2 days post-op. do not gulp your fluids. I would use a little medicine cup that holds an ounce and average 4-6 little capfuls in an hour. That might make it more tolerable while you are still healing. Did you have a hiatal hernia repair? I had both done this past Tuesday (2/5). Sounds like the pains I get occasionally. Good luck!

I had the same problem for probably a week post op. I am 2.5 weeks out now and have no problems. I actually had pain to the point of keeling over after every sip. My doctor told me to just focus on the fluids (esp some with electrolytes like diluted G2) and not worry about the Protein. That way you get enough Water to keep dehydration at bay while waiting for the pain to go away. It is normal to have esophageal spasms and stomach spasms right now. There is a ton of inflammation in there that can cause the muscles to go a little crazy but it'll get better!

Best of luck and if it gets so severe you can't keep fluids down call doctor at once.

Oh, and track dehydration easily by looking at your pee. As long as it's still clear you're fine. Worry about dehydration if you are getting dizzy when standing, feel extremely weak, dizzy when go for a walk, delirium. An try some warm broths as those felt better for me

I agree again. My MD has me on Clear Liquids until I see him for my first post op visit in 3 more days. Not sure when Proteins are added back in but probably soon. I also take a prontonix every morning and they gave me a med for nausea but I haven't needed that yet thankfully. Good luck again!

I am 5 days post op and I am having some spasms, too. I had more in the hospital than I do now. At first, they occurred with every drink of Water but I think they will eventually resolve because they are coming less frequently. It is not unbearable pain and does not interfere with me getting my fluids and Protein in. Overall, I have had a very positive experience. Very little pain, good energy and no real hunger.

Glad to hear that at day 5 things are getting better for you. Beginning tomorrow, I'm able to add oatmeal, yogurt, and creamy Soup to my diet, I'm a little afraid to try these because of the pain I'm experiencing just with the liquids, but as you say my pain is also tolerable and I'm excited for this new tool to work for me! ;)

I'm almost 7 months out, and I remember having the same pains my first few days. If something is too cold, or too big of a swallow, I will still feel some pain for a few seconds.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I had the spasms all the way up and down my throat ever since the surgery. It's a real quick way of making you never want a sip of anything ever again. It was so bad it would cause my stomach to heave. It was terrible. I had my surgery on the 5th and I'm still getting them. BUT they're less and less frequent and intense.

I don't really feel pain from the tubes they put down my throat but they must have really done a number on it because the spasms are just god awful. I'm supposed to go back Tuesday after next, really hoping to feel a lot better than this by then.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
