average hospital stay?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon told me that once I was tolerating 3 to 4 ounces of liquid per hour that I would be discharged. I guess that I just assumed that I would probably just be at the hospital one night IF everything goes ok. But I see a lot of you staying 2 or 3 nights at the hospital. Just wondering how long all of you post op sleevers stayed in the hospital, and if you had to reach a certain "goal" to be able to go home?

My surgeon has you stay 3 days. He does a leak test on the table and then a leak test the next day (before allowing any liquids). Then he wants to see you drinking well and being compliant before being released to go home the next day. So 2 nights and 3 days. Compliance is a big thing for him.

I stayed 2 days! My doctor has his patients stay two days, but I only wanted to stay one. He said if I felt ready after the first day and everything was going well he would let me go..

Well when he came in and checked on me he kind of chuckled and said do you still want to leave!

Yeah.... I stayed two :P

In Tuesday AM out Wednesday PM. Could not get out of there fast enough. Had to wait until Dr. finished a couple of surgeries, as he wants to see all his patients before the check out (not just the PA).

I'm getting sleeved in Mexico.. My doctor has you stay two nights in the hospital and then you stay two more nights in a hotel before going home. My guess is, that even if you are doing fabulously, you won't be released early due to the logistics of booking with the hospital/hotel.

Show off!!

I looked at it like a mini vacation from the kids... housework...

That and it hurt!

My Dr. had also said I would be released as soon as he new I was able to tolerate 3 to 4 oz an hour. But that being said he didn't even allow any oral intake other then ice chips till after the leak test the morning after surgery, then I had to wait until the next day when he could be sure I was drinking enough for a sustained amount of time. So I spent 3day, 2 night in.

I'm in Western Australia and Doctor has advised all his gastric sleeve patients are in for 3 nights. He said this is because if there is a leak it's easier to pick up while you're in hospital.

I had surgery a week ago Monday morning. Nothing but ice chips the rest of the day. Upper G.I. (leak test) early on Tuesday, then liquids (chicken broth, sugar-free Jello, crystal lite) the rest of the day. Released on Wednesday morning. So, two nights!

I stayed 7 nights. Like Laura, i thought it was a mini holiday away from my boys and house. I LOVED it, well apart from the fact that I wasn't eating like I was on holiday. With my PCA on for 4 1/2 days, it was really like being in a hotel LOL

Totally enjoyed the experience, how soon we forget the gas and tummy pains we had…

Surgery Thursday morning the 28th was going to be released Friday afternoon but I couldn't pee so they kept me til Saturday. Very little pain, was walking 3 hours after surgery. I couldn't be happier.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
