Post-Op Discharge Instructions/Nutrition Support

Recommended Posts

I've been perusing the forums and have noticed what seems to be a lack of post-op instructions. Is this something that I would need to address early on with my nutrition/surgeon consult, or is this information generally provided at some point pre-surgery? Post surgery do you continue to meet with a nutritionist for diet adjustments?

Thanks for your help.

I think it really depends on the surgeons/ doctors office. My surgeon has a great post op program, in fact my first few post op visits all including meetings with my surgeon and a nutritionist.

What type of program, can you be more specific? Did you get a specific diet?

My dr has everything I needed from the start of this whole process. Nutritionists, psy for the evaluation, pulmonary specialists, he does the endoscopy himself . The only dr I had to see outside his office was a cardiologist which I chose from a long list that he provided. I followed a dr/ nutrionist recommended low carb high Protein pre op diet, then 3 weeks before surgery I was put on 2 Protein Shakes & a lean Protein meal diet. After surgery I was met by a nutritionist at the hospital and given instructions (liquid) to follow until my post op appointment. At my 1st post op appointment I met with my surgeon & then the NUT and was moved to mushy foods, then 2nd post op I was moved to soft foods, 3rd appt I was moved from soft foods To all foods except veggies. You just really need to find a dr that will be helpful both pre & post op.

Good luck!

Thanks very much for this information. That's cool, that everything was in 1 office, very convenient. And that is exactly what I'm looking for in a surgeon. I have 3 that I'm considering right now.
