Appetite suppressants to get through pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am starting my pre-op diet and like other posters have said before me, it is hell! Even in the past when I only do one or two shakes a day to try and cut down on my eating-- I am hungry. Starting tomorrow, I'm limited to 4 Protein Shakes a day and a few servings of SF Jello and the like. I don't want to cheat. I have a couple of appetite suppressant bottles from other failed diet attempts. They do work to suppress my appetite (hoodia extract). Would it hurt to take a few to get through the first 3-5 days? I've heard that most people say the first several days are the worst and I want to be successful.

Honestly, I wouldn't mess with appetite suppressants, many are not FDA approved and may contain "crap" that could affect you during or after surgery. My surgeon said to stop green tea, st. john's wart, and other supplements 3 weeks before surgery.

You can do the pre-op diet without them, you've come this far why take a chance of screwing things up now.

Drink lots of Water don't jeopardize your safety during surgery because you wanted not feel hunger.. First 2 days are bad after that you'll be ok

I'm on day 3 and yes the 1st 2 day were the worst...but I made it thru and so will you...I wouldn't risk taking anything this close to your surgery that could possibly cause a complication. If we all can do it so can you jus drink lots of flavored water it's really helping me (you know those 5 calorie packs you can put in your Water bottle) You can do it be strong!!!

I had strict instructions to NOT take any diet pills (otc or prescription) and/or any herbal remedies 14 days before surgery. I just wouldn't do it if I were you. I'll be feeling your pain next week when I'm on pre op. Keep your eye on the prize. Hang in there.

Like everyone says, don't take them. They Can cause cardiac failure during surgery.

Not worth it. They can market anything for appetite suppressant and sell it to folks, more times than not, they put junk product in there while most of it will be detrimental to your health. They also like to throw in diuretics to help facilitate Water loss to show a loss of weight. Water loss is probably the LAST thing you want at this point. FDA not approving them doesn't mean anything. Just keep pushing through, it'll be over in no time. Don't risk not being able to have the surgery, keep thinking long term. Good luck!

I cannot speak specifically to the diet pills but I did take an antihistamine the day before my First surgery and my heart rate spiked and they had to stop the procedure. I woke up to a tube in my throat and hooked up to several monitors. It was the scariest thing I had been through ever. The cardiologist said he could not be 100% sure that was the cause, but he suspected it was and it was the only out of the ordinary thing in the weeks surrounding my surgery. Any stimulant, diet pills included, can cause heart palpitations on their own and they wont' know if the anesthesia will exacerbate that. I was able to go back and have my sleeve a month later, but had I been aware of what could happen I would have lived with the sinus'.

You can do this. Good luck!

Trust me if I could take one I would... I've been doing pre op diet for the last week (started on the 1st) and I am totally starving. Doesn't help at all that we are snowed in during the blizzard and my children are sitting around eating yummy crunchy Snacks while i scarf down sugar free Jello and Popsicles!!! But the whole reason I am not cheating is because this process helps shrink your liver which makes the surgery easier. So if I can do this to make things as easy as possible for my surgeon I will do it. Keep that in mind and let THAT be your diet pill. :-)

if I can do this... Anyone can.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
