6 month post-op & nurse prac sending me to hair specialist

Recommended Posts

So, I'm 11 days short of 7 months. I had my 6 month checkup yesterday and my nurse practitioner is so concerned with my incredible Hair loss that she's referring me to a dermatologist. I've lost over half of my hair. I've always taken all my Vitamins (including Biotin), got all my Protein in, using the specialty shampoos and protein hair treatments... I'm afraid I'm going to lose all of it. I'd even wear a hat to work if I could. On a good note, all my blood tests are great. I'm off my meds, cholesterol and blood pressure are all great. I'm trying to focus on the good and positive things, but its so hard dealing with losing this amount of hair. Growing up, I loved my hair when I didn't love anything else about me. Thanks for letting me vent to people I know can possibly relate and understand.

Are you losing just the hair on your head? What about your eye brows? If it includes your eyelashes and eye brows it could be something a specialist needs to address but honestly I think a lot of people go thru this... I've had to cut my hair into a very short pixie cut ( think Anne Hathaway lately) that short... I had extremely long thick curly hair... It is now thin and scarce... The good news is at 9 months my hair dresser is seeing little sprouts of new hair all over my head.

Hang in there!!!

I know it's scary :(

wow. hair loss THAT extreme usually doesn't make much to do with weight loss surgery but I suppose it could have triggered something in you that has caused your hair to fall out. Have you looked into wigs? I went through a period of time that my Hair loss from my thyroid condition was so extreme (in my mind, looking back it wasn't SO BAD) that I bought and wore a wig for a short period of time.

If you are interested a good place to start researching is youtube, and also from experience I recommend wigs that have bangs of some sort because besides a very low quality of hair overall, the most telltale sign someone is wearing a wig is the hairline.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
