Hello - this is my first post. I am scheduled to have my surgery on December 6th and I am so excited. My friend just had her surgery on Wednesday. She is really sick with diarrhea and can only eat Jello. Has this happen to any of you? Do you have any suggestions that I can give her?

Thanks - I'm looking forward to learning from all of you!

Hi Patricia---welcome to LBT. You and your friend both have begun a great journey here!!! I was like your friend, and had some issues that way. I eventually was told.....it is common, liquids in--liquids out. All you take in the first weeks is liquid...so as soon as she begins a heavier liquid and then on to mushies, it should be fine. I suffered through it for a week or so, it seems many here have. And I also found some broths made me worse, so maube if she alters the liquids she is taking in.

Hope she feels better soon, and is on the road to healing, and ready to help you along as you join her!!!

Once again, welcome to you both!!

Kat

Hi Patricia,

I just had my surgery last Wednesday, also, and have had diarrhea since the day after! Today is the first day that I am better, and I believe it is because I started eating foods with more to them, like yogurt and Cream of Wheat. I think the yogurt at least should help. Have your friend try them, if possible, even if she can only get down a little. And I do think that having diarrhea is better than having Constipation. I seem to have less problem with the gas pains then those who can't "go". There is always a silver lining! Good luck to your friend and to you! Keep us posted!

Yup, like Kat said, liquid in, liquid out.

Last time around, I ended up constipated from the morphine they had me on at the hospital. This time (the revision), everything's just running out of me and I much prefer it. Nothing like straining your stomach right after it's been cut open lol.

When she starts getting more substance in things will subside. Probably a huge shock to the system too, to go from eating solids to only stuff that goes through a straw.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. She is feeling better today and is able to keep stuff down. The cream of wheat worked really good.

This is a great board! Thanks again!

I too had diarrhea and felt weak the first week post-op. Honestly, if all you're taking in is broth, juice, Water, i.e., that's just simple carbs with no Protein. I started yogurt a few days early--just smooth yogurt with no chunks in it, and only 2-4 ounces no more than twice a day. It was amazing how much better I felt. I suggest trying that. Good luck!

Hope all is well now. I had the same problem and found out two things.

They gave me an antibiotic shot at surgery that can cause it. I was told to let it run it's course. It did.

I also discovered that there is something in Slimfast shakes and bars that cause it ....badly..... I stopped using them and am fine. Someone said it was the guar gum, whatever that is.

Good luck and best wishes in the journey!

A lot of low carb/diet products are now made with sugar alcohol. Anything more than 3g per serving leaves me feeling miserable, rumbly in the tummy and attached to a bathroom for at least a day.

The slimfast bar I looked up online has 12g.

Hey Y'all!

I have been miserable with diarrhea all day today = first day on thick liquids and 8th day post-op. So, I came to this website and typed in the key word "diarrhea" and found that this problem is not unusual. Also, learned that Slimfast shakes can give it to you. Ironically, I had one this morning as my first "unclear" liquid. You can bet that the rest of them will go into the trash!

This website is sooooooooooo helpful! It saved me from calling the Dr., who is 50 miles away, and whose staff are all on autophone messaging and say they will call you back within 48 hrs.; yes, you read it right, forty-eight hours! And they usually take most of those 48 before returning your call.

Anyway, thanks for all your input into this embarrassing subject.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
