Surgery with a cold

Recommended Posts

My Husband and I are having surgery Friday in Mexico. Lastnight he started with symptoms of a cold. No fever but coughing and his throat hurts (i think from coughing) will they still do surgery?

Oh no...I'm so sorry. This is one of my fears right before surgery. I would like to know too....

I had a cold on the day of surgery, got it the night before surgery. I asked my surgeon and anesthesiologist and they said they would still do it but it was up to me. I was already there, so I figured I might as well if it won't be a problem. I assumed when I went in for surgery they would tell me to go home, but nope! (This is in the US)

However, I did end up with a leak two weeks later, unknown reason, but definitely wasn't from anything I did. I doubt the cold had anything to do with it, but it is one of the things that I wonder about...

Try to get some cold eeze sugar free zinc lozenges. Or some of the zicam that you can swab the nose with! I have been loading up on vit C and zinc to prevent anything before surgery and it usually helps with the first onset of symptoms! Good luck!

I had a slight cold and cough and the doctor said that they would do it unless I had a fever and was coughing up mucus. I was nervous about the cough in particular, I just thought that it would be really painful.

Everything was fine, I sailed through recovery and had no issues at all. The cough was no worse after surgery than before, and although it was uncomfortable to cough with the stitches it was not intolerable.

it's usually anesthesia's call..., and that just depends on the doc and how they were trained. It would be worth a phone call to your coordinator before you get on the plane but it should probably be fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
