I am on my 4th port!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

New to group,

I am the patient doctors don't want to admit exist! I had the band in January 2003 and have had 4 port replacements since. In the beginning, the pain was so severe around my side I could hardly move for days at a time. They say it must has irratated a nerve where the port was?

Has anyone had problems with the port coming through their skin? This is my 4th port, the first three all came through the skin within a few months of surgery. The doc said my body must be rejecting it? Finally they put in a stainless steel one, the wound healed and months later a pimple started on the spot and in days, it was open again. It did close again in a few months only to open again.

I get a small amount of a puss like oooz but the doc said it was not an infection? It doesn't hurt but is annoying. I actually traveled to Kazakhstan for 47 days with it open for an adoption.

I initally lost 46 pounds (was 306) now 260 and staying that weight. I can eat almost regularly even though they say I am about tightened to the max I can be?

Yes, I know how to cheat while eating and that is bad. I could write for hours about this buy just wanted to get a part of my story out.

talk again soon.

Bill

Just from what you have said and what I have experienced myself and seen my friends go through as well it sounds like you need to have the port removed and let that area heal from the inside out before you think about getting another port anytime soon.

I don't think your body is rejecting the port (although I have no proof of that and I am no doctor). Call it a hunch.

I would have to disagree with the doc that said it wasn't infection. Did he do a swab of the pus? That would be the only conclusive way to determine if it was or not.

Personally I think you had an infection from the first port and they kept putting ports back in the same area therefore putting a clean port back into an infected area.

Of course these are just my opinions. So take them with a grain of salt. I have heard of at least two or three cases and two I saw first hand where the port was infected and had to be removed and the area left open so it could heal from the inside out.

I wish you luck and good health.

Is it possible to put your port somewhere else? Maybe the other side of your body so you could let the first place heal and get a port at the same time? ~Mandy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
