Pre-op diet and the smell of food

Recommended Posts

Doing good on pre-op diet. Only thing that's tough is that I am a home health speech therapist and I'm at their houses and I smell their cooking. I show up in the morning and they are cooking Breakfast, noon and its lunch, and after 5 and its dinner. That's killing me but I'm holding strong. This is my second day of the pre-op.

My pre op was 3 weeks. Warm broth and warm Decaf tea will help with hunger make sure to drink the shake first. Eat Jello after broth after shake jello makes the empty feeling go away. I did mess up the first day but got right back on track and made it. Yes I got headaches and they do go away try aleve sometimes it didn't work. I would have to take a headache sleep med like tylenol pm for a few days. The head hunger is the worst. Once you get to surgery it is completely different had mine feb 8th watched my kids and their dad eat fast food and felt no hunger. I even dreamed about food so much during the pre op. I promise it becomes easier and it was hard but the end result is great. I lost a little over 20 pounds on pre op. I have faith in you and have you all in my prayers keep up the good work. You can do this remember that!

My pre-op is 2 weeks. 2 Protein shakes and I small meal. I have done pretty well. First day I was starving. 2nd day I had headaches, third day I felt really good and the fourth day I was light headed. Now I'm ok except today for whatever reason I was super hungry.

Water has helped me. I find if I drink at least one flavored water either crystal light or propel it helps with the hunger. Fools my tummy into thinking it got some food bc of the flavor. Other than that it gets better. It's tough but hang in there. Oh and the higher the Protein count on the shake the longer I felt not necessarily full but at least not hungry. Premier Protein with 30 grams filled me up better than EAS with 17 grams. Good luck.

It is interesting to me. My surgeon has me on the Atkins Diet Phase I. I get nervous because I read so many people are on liquid diets and mine is clearly not. I have re-read and re-read my instructions and even called to be sure I am not messing things up since my surgery is on the 19th. Can anyone tell me the 2 week diet their surgeon has them on? And is anyone else on the Atkins Diet for pre-op?

Every surgeon is different yours may understand how difficult an all liquid diet is. I was envious of people who got to have a meal with two shakes. All I got was liquids Jello and popcicles all sugarfree. It is different with everyone don't worry about it. There are people here that don't even have a diet. Lucky lol. But after surgery mine has stayed the say total liquids for 3 more weeks. Some only have 2 weeks after surgery.

That's either evil thinking or genius marketing! Torture either way. My second job is next to Subway and all that yummy bread baking smell filters in to our office.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
