What's it like to have the flu post op?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I'm still pre-op but I'm sitting here miserable with the flu today. I am wondering what the experience is like post-op. Any of you come down with a stomach bug yet that causes you to throw up frequently? What's that like on your sleeve? How do you prevent dehydration when you are ill? Are there any specific drinks you try to get down?

I imagine that it's probably very much the same as when you had your whole stomach but, just in case, I wanted to ask. :)

I caught the flu and the stomach virus while in the hospital during my surgery (Dec 10th). So I ended being in the hospital for like a week but luckily I had the iv to help and my doctor was there to make sure it wasn't the sleeve. But they feel about the same as pre op. only thing in is - I felt a little weaker (than usual) since I was just on Clear liquids and had just got off a pre-op diet.

Even though I did not throw up, I felt pretty miserable with the flu two weeks ago (7 month post sleeve). Body aches, sore throat and dehydration were the worse. I had trouble drinking for the first couple of days with the flu so I was almost passing out. It took a few days to get hydrated properly again. Fortunately, I was able to do this on my own but was close to making an ER visit.

I had the flu a week ago(7 weeks post op). This did not cause me to have any stomach issues or vomiting. I had high fever, dizziness, body aches, cough etc... I took a trip to the ER thinking it was a leak or something. They gave me 2 liters of IV Fluid and sent me on my way. They also gave me antibiotics for the cough and yucky looking stuff i was coughing up. I couldn't somach the antibiotics and stopped taking them.

I was in bed for about 5 days and lost 8 pounds. It was pretty miserable, but luckily it didn't happen right after surgery. I couldn't even imagine how that would feel. I was not able to drink much and didn't eat for 2 days. I finally was able to eat chicken Soup and get more fulids in. I was also pretty dehydrated.

I did receive the flu shot back in October, but think this was some other flu virus.

Hey, our flu stories are almost identical except no ER for me. Best advise is to stay extra hydrated. Getting dehydrated is not fun! I still have chest congestion and couple on 3 rd week since starting flu symptoms.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
