Gaining weight before surgery!

Recommended Posts

So I was approved for the Sleeve on January 29th after fighting my insurance company for almost 3 months. I have been in contact with my doctors office since October 28th which was my initial weigh in. Well I did good for the first month than the fighting began with CIGNA. I got so stressed out that over the holidays and until recently I gained 15 pounds since my October weigh in. I have been doing strict dieting since January 30th and actually started my liquid diet earlier than what they told me. My surgery date is February 11th and I do my "Bootcamp" this Wednesday the 6th. Have you heard of a bariatric office delaying surgery because you gained weight before? All they told me in the beginning was they would "like" to see me lose 10lbs before.

No.. As long as you do your pre-op liquid diet like they want then you should be golden. I had some serious last meal syndrome. My first eval was in November and I was 233. By the time I had surgery in January I was at 250. I did my two week pre-op liquid diet and they said everything looked great.

Thanks Britt, that is a huge relief. I don't know how much more I can handle with denials at this point. I may go all Britney Spears and shave my head.

Yep, they won't cancel anything on you. I gained 15 from October as well. I'm down 10lbs from the preop diet, which was 7 days, you won't have any trouble.

2 of my friends had their surgeries delayed because they gained weight. Not because they didn't lose enough

I've gained 11 lbs. Since August (my initial consult with bariatric team). Now after all my required weight management from physician, pre-op done, I now have to wait at least till May for my sleeve. Surgeon is scheduled out that far..boo...:( who knew it would take so long? Now to keep my weight at bay, ahh, food is my friend!;)

i understand completely. I started last may, I completed my 6month diet in october and thought I'd get a date somewhere between november and december....right...Today is my surgery day a good 3 months later. I gained about 30% of what I lost in the supervised diet but in the 7 day preop I lost most of it. I still wish it had been closer to the diet stage because I think the transition to surgery would have been easier. I was in a better mindset over what I was doing. I totally fell off the wagon into some chocolate cake and rolled in it a while, then became obsessed w/ a couple weeks worth of 'last meals.' In October I was sure this was what I wanted I was excited and now I just kinda miss the cake.

I guess I just lost the excitement, it's been replaced with, 'this is gonna be hard and its going to be hard for a while.' The reasons I'm doing this haven't changed though. I'm willing to myself to the process and let the rest be whatever it is.

My initial weigh in with my Doc was on dec 7th and I weighed 252. When I weighed in on 1/31 I weighed 262. So I gained 10 lbs in that almost 2 months. The 262 is what my doc is going to use for future comparison. She didn't seem to have an issue with me gaining. I am scheduled to be sleeved on 2/12. I started my pre-op diet yesterday (a day early). I won't lie and say this weekend was not a good eating weekend. Kind of had a little bit of things I want either going to have again or wouldn't have for a long time. That whole "Last supper" thing totally happened.

Dont worry...u can do this. I dont think anyone has been perfect on the pre op diet. My surgery is on Monday and I have had a few slips as far as keeping up with only having Protein shakes, its hard but the important thing is to KEEP GOING!:)

I've also gained since October. My surgeon didn't say anything about it. I start pre op next Monday. I shouldn't do the "last supper" this weekend...But, I probably will ;)

I can't believe how long the insurance companies make most wait for approval and then ask for more from you. I'm surprised people don't give up and not do it... But then I wonder if that's what the insurance companies hope you do. GRRR ...

I agree, these insurance companies are soooo picky. I swear I cried after every denial and wants to pull my hair out.

My dr said he would postpone the surgery if I gained even one pound because if I did it would show that I'm not on board with the necessary changes. I'm so scared! I've lost 6 pounds since then but we all know how fast that can be regained.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
