Ok so I have my 1st appt with my surgeon Feb 19th 2013. When I went to his seminar a couple of weeks ago he barely talked about the sleeve. It was mostly a RNY seminar :/ So I didn't get much info at all on the sleeve. But the research I have done has led me to feel that the sleeve is the best option for me. I am kind of afraid of the RNY. The malabsorption is what I'm most afraid of. The sleeve seems like the middle of the road for me. But I don't know it I would be the best candidate for it or if RNY would be best for me. So I'll put my stats and if anyone knows or has an unprofessional opinion I'd love to hear it :)

5'6"

287 lbs ( lost 29 lbs in 6 month diet)

bmi 46.3

Hello, first off congrats on taking the steps to changing your life. I had the sleeve done 2 months ago and i was up walking around 4 hours after surgery and ive lost 45 pounds in 5 weeks. The process is very simple. You would be admitted they would drug you up you go to sleep they will make 6 incisions and go in laprosopicaly divide your stomach and new pouch than staple the new pouch closed and bam your on your way to a new skinny and healthy life. It took me about a week to fully be able to function without alot of discomfort but you get plenty of good meds. I had surgery on dec 4th at 270 pounds I am now 2 months out and 45 pounds down. Good luck

I just had my first consult with my surgeon and told him I was not comfortable with the RNY and that I was only interested in the sleeve. He agreed that I was a perfect candidate for the sleeve and the weight loss amounts are reallly close so it's really almost a preference thing. I just coudn't go with the re-routing and malabsorption.

Honestly, I was afraid before my appt that he might say I should do the RNY but once he knew I wanted the sleeve and had some fears about RNY, he never mentioned it.

Looking at your stats, my unprofessional opinion is that you would be perfect for the sleeve too! Just make sure you let your surgeon know how you feel about the RNY and Sleeve at your appt.

Best of luck! Keep us updated!

I think you are just right for the sleeve based upon my research. Also, if you wanted to get a revision in the future, if you don't lose enough weight, they can do that too from what I understand. Congrats!

I'm 5'6" and 303. My surgeon told me I was an ideal candidate for sleeve.

Yep, I'd agree that you're an ideal sleeve candidate based on stats alone. The RNY will certainly work for you, too, but it might be more surgery than you need, and yes, there's the lifelong issue of Vitamin malabsorption to consider.

I'm 5'1" (and a little extra) and was 242 on surgery day. That's a BMI of 45.7 and pretty similar to your starting BMI.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

A huge reason for me would be NSAIDS! No NSAIDS ever? You can with sleeve! I was only approved for sleeve by my rheumy, but everyone has aches and pains....how many overweight people don't have some osteoarthritis?

I asked about RNY, just out of curiosity really, and my surgeon looked at me like I was crazy just about. He said there's not many people these day's he would actually recommend the bypass to, and I most certainly was not one of them. To me the limits the bypass puts you on really killed it for me anyway. I was curious what would provide greater weight loss and quality of life, and since they're seeing like results and better quality of life with the sleeve procedure, it was pretty simple for me, lap band was never a thought, I didn't like the idea of having some "port" stuck in me.

I'd say sleeve is going to be a great option for you. Just really stress that to the Dr about how you feel about things.

Thank you so much everyone :) I was really concerned that my weight is too high and that he might say I should get the RNY if I really want to lose weight. I don't want to go through surgery just to lose 40 or 50 lbs. I AT LEAST want to get to 200. And I say that because my "fat brain" can't wrap itself around the thought of me being under 200.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
