Why do people go to Mexico for surgery?

Huge cost difference for those of who are self pay and many of us can't get it covered through insurance for one reason or another here in the states.

Cheaper out of pocket expense.

The surgery at my hospital would cost out of pocket $18000. A mexico trip will set you back around $6000. For a lot of people it moves the surgery from unattainable to affordable.

So what happens with follow up visits and nutricionist and or if there's a problem? Do you have to go back to Mexico for all that ?

as far as i know there isn't a lot post op. I do know people can call the place they had the surgery at and I've heard they can be very helpful.

I had my surgery on October 8, 2011 with Dr. Aceves and I have never had a post op/follow up appointment. Nor have I called them with any kind of problem. Everything has been fine. I started out a size 24 and now I am a size 8 and continuing to lose. I love my sleeve!

Why do people go to Mexico for surgery?

Hey Christy

So I had my first appointment today with Dr. Vemulapalli I was told I have to see a cardiologist, pulmonary, and psychiatrist...I was given an appointment for weight management next month..I have to see the nutritionist twice then once I'm done with the above doctors the nutritionist will give me a package and an appointment to see vemulapalli for surgery..so how I'm seeing it I should be having my surgery in about April or may sometime..I asked if my insurance required a 6 months weigh ins she said no so that's good...I hate the long wait lol so my next appointment is march 6 with the nutritionist..hope all is well with you on your Quest as well

Hey.. That's great and very happy for you. My insurance is CIGNA and 6 Months weight management is mandatory for approval. Sucks but at the same time it gives me time to really think things out , also giving a last chance to lose weight on my own because this is life changing and there's no going back. Scared of waking up and seeing a different me after almost 20 years of being overweight/obese . I'm seeing doctor Choi and montifiore and everyone tells me she's great. I have a co workers wife that had her surgery done by Choi back in October and has lost 75 pounds already. With no complications . The staff at montifiore are great. Live the hospital so clean just gives you a peaceful thing about it. A year ago I was trying to go to Lenox and saw dr Roseline which was al Rokers bariatric surgeon but something about him just didn't sit well with me so I decided to give montifiore a try and so far I haven't regretted anything . I have four more months of weight management and I believe after that they start the pre-op testing and submit to insurance . I believe maybe by the summer I should be done with the whole thing and living a new ME life! Lol I wish u the best in your journey and hopefully we meet each other some day at the hospital! Keep in touch :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
