Dehydration and when to go to the hospital

Recommended Posts

I know I'm dehydrated and have been since day 1. I don't get enough Fluid in.

How do I know when it's at the point that I should go to the hospital. Given that I'm asking, that says a lot about how bad it probably is. But I just want to be sure because unless I'm admitted, and my copay is waived, I can't afford to just go for nothing.

Thanks!

You likely will not be admitted for dehydration but nonetheless have no choice but to get in if you are not able to hydrate sufficiently. IV fluids are probably necessary. If you are asking you need to go. Please get yourself in, dehydration can cause kidney failure.

No amount of money is worth losing your health over. Dehydration is serious business.

My opinion is that if you cannot drink without nausea or throwing up, it is time to go get an IV. Almost been there and done that. I know a few others had to do this so do not worry, you are not alone on this. Try the old person finger test. Pinch your index finger at the end closest to the tip. If your skin molds and does not bounce back, you should check for dehydration. By the way, made that test up so do get urgent care if you need it or perhaps others have good advise.

I was admitted for dehydration because I was vomiting everytime I put fluids in me. I was 3 days out from surgery. They kept me for 5 days. Dehydration is a pretty serious thing. We need fluids for our body to work. Once you get behind on your fluids its so hard to get caught up. Have you tried Gatorade, sf popsicles and chicken broth? I understand your worry about the cost. I ended up with a pretty hefty hospital bill after. I still don't regret going because I know I couldn't do it without some help. Good luck and keep us posted.

I just can't. I eat fine but liquid just feels odd and I have to practically choke it down. Been that way since day one post op when I was just rinsing my mouth and not drinking the Water.

I have the flu. And when speaking to my room mate who has the same, he said he felt this way yesterday but is better today:

-out of it

- light headed

-dry mouth

Surprisingly I have gone #2 a lot as well lately.

Maybe it's just all in my head? My roomie is fine.

Edit:

Pee is clear

You reminded me of Pedialite. Even though it is for kids, it works well for adults too. It has electrolytes in it that really help you recover from dehydration. I had to use it a couple weeks ago when I was really dehydrated a couple times from the flu.

I think u live in the Bay Area also poweraid zero is on sale at Safeway 99 cents for 32oz

They have electrolytes, potassium etc..

I think the pee thing is a good sign.. Drinking is no fun sometimes but you gotta do it! :)

I just find drinking so hard. I can go some days with 4-8 oz of Fluid which is horrible but I just can't seem to do it.

I can't imagine drinking 64 oz or more in a day...

But these are the consequences I guess. I brought it on myself.

You have to do it!! You will end up in the hospital if you don't!' go and buy a variety of different things. Warm, cold, I even add mio to my Water sometimes so I can choke it down ( sweet tea is the best)

Hell even is you just drink some Protein shakes and chicken broth that will be better than 4 to 6oz

Mixing my Protein drink, I use as little Fluid as possible. If its more than 8 oz, I can't finish it.

:( I suppose if I don't get better by tomorrow I'll go to the doctor or ER

The sliming thing I've never had but of you eat just a little at a time 2oz that should help with that is it possible just to take sips through out the day?

I mean I sometimes feel like I have to devote my WHOLE DAY to liquid! :P

I'm just trying to see if there's something you can do to avoid having to go to the hospital...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
